4000 steering shaft

I bought a used 1973 4000 SU with power steering that is diconeected it has a bad pump. It also has a lot of play in it and when I turn the steering wheel the steering shaft looks like it kind of unscrews about 3/4 turn before it starts turning and then screws back in when turned the opposite direction. I was wondering what part of the steering would probably be causing this. Once it is turning it doesn't feel like anything else is going on and turns fine.

Upper thrust bearing in steering box is shot.

Can I get to this with just removing the top part with the steering cover?

Uhmmm...If the 4000 is anything like the 3000, I have quite a bit of experience with this. Unfortunately, all BAD experiences. Anyway that manual for steering shaft is a great help. I agree to the other guy, check the upper thrust bearing .
