What is this gizmo called and what does it do?

Thanks.
What would happen if it is defective?
Is it needed to keep the fuel pressure at 40 psi?

I think it only regulates which way the fumes go. So fumes free flow from tank to the canister.

Take hose off the tank.
See if it runs right with that tank port open or plugged.
I would think if plugged, the pump would eventually not be able to overcome the vacuum it created in the tank.

I am sure that you have saw a plastic gas can swell up when hot.

The check valve prevents the tank from building excessive pressure. The gases (fumes) are forced into the EVAP canister. Over filling the fuel tank can lead to gasoline entering the EVAP system which is not good.

No. A bad check valve will not prevent fuel pressure loss. That could be caused by a few things. Bad fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad fuel lines, bad fuel filter or a number of check valves.

What you are showing is the in tank screen. Not the fuel filter. And by the looks of that one. It looks as if some garbage snake oils have been added to the fuel..

As I told you in the last thread. Those engines do not like cheap fuel. I have saw more problems by the use of cheap fuel in those machines than any other.

Agree, Where is the fuel pressure regulator and where is the evap can?
As long as it runs no new pump. The DFI light came on again. I blew out the fuel filter. It didn't appear to be blocked.

My bet is the fuel pressure regulator is inside the fuel pump assembly you pictured. Probably in that hump to the right of the filter.
Where is the evap can? might follow the hose from that check valve, I bet it is on the other end!

Fuel pressure Regulator is inside of the canister that holds the pump.. Circled in photo below.

EVAP canister is mounted to the fame in front of the fuel tank. It could be round or an oval/square like shape depending on the spec. The line from the check valve connects to the top of the round one... And oval type. It can connect to the top, bottom or side. Again depending on spec.
Just follow the line from the check valve.

George, have you looked on YouTube? There are some videos concerning fuel pressure, etc. may also find information at Kawieriders.com forums.

Thinking that you have the CA spec mule. If so the fuel filter is in the tank.

If not. The Fuel filter looks like the attached photo. It will be near where the fuel line exits the fuel tank.

>>>>>.. If you have the CA spec.. A new fuel pump assembly that includes everything that comes out of the tank when you pull the pump can be gotten for around $50.00 or less on the web.. CA spec mule uses the same pump that is used on the Tyrex.

I think I have fuel pump issues. The screen filter on the pump is the only thing I can find. I made a special screen filter so all the gas that goes into the tank is clean. I'm not going to do anything until it stops running.
The shop manual says I need 40 psi of fuel pressure because it is fuel injected.
Right now it runs perfectly except for the DFI light comes on. I have tractors if I need to tow it back to the barn.

You can pull the codes from the DFI. They will tell you what's going on.

This web site will tell you how to pull the codes and what each one pertains to. Easier than trying to explain the steps here. And you can book mark it.

Thanks for your help.
The filter you showed isn't a fuel filter. There's 3 hoses going to the evap can. The hose connected to the bottom of the can goes to the filter and the hose coming off the filter goes no where.
I don't think the lighting shows the hose off the bottom of the evap can.

All is good for now. DFI light is off.

I made a special gas filter that fits in the gas tank hole to filter the gas.
