4010 Tank Heater

Can someone explain how you install or route a tank heater on a 4010 diesel. There is mention of a plug behind the generator that can be used as well as the drain plug.

The factory fittings used the drain valve on the left side of the block and one of the pipe plugs on the right side of the cylinder head. They made an adapter for the drain valve to fit a suitable hose that runs across the front of the engine. The tank heater resides below the generator. The plug on the head is standard pipe threads so standard pipe fittings adapt to the hose.

My 4020 (early) parts book shows the elbow at the drain valve is AR42590 coupled to the block with a 1/4" pipe coupling and a 7/8" long close nipple. The hoses are 5/8" i.d. At the head the fitings ar 3/4 to 1/2" reducing bushing and then a 1/2" pipe to 5/8" hose (probably barbed) adapter. In the era of the 4020, that fitting was special, JD numbr R41985.

Gerald J. Thanks for the information on the heater. One additional question. Is the pipe plug in the cylinder head the one next to the injector which would take a large allen wrench to remove.

Yes. BIG allen wrench. Probably well glued and rusted in place.

I'd go for a 1/2" drive male hex wrench and a long breaker bar.

The plug mentioned is usually very very hard to remove, most likely they had lock-tite used at Deere. Use a hot torch just on the plug, then let it cool before trying to remove.

I never could see running a heater all night to be able to start my tractor and if I didn't use it for several days I was paying for all that heat and getting nothing out of it.

So on tractors that had no cold weather aid, I just snuck the wife's hair dryer out and blew hot air in the air intake for a couple of minutes and fired her right up.

Removing old rusted pipe plugs in cast iron engines scares me cause something always breaks. So I look for alternate ways of accomplishing the objective.
