4020 good or bad

What are the highs or lows about a 4020? About 20 years ago when I was buying a 3010, I kind of remember hearing about problems on the 4010. It's to long ago to remember what I was told. I'm looking at a 4020 now, should I go or stay away? thanks

is it a power shift or manuel,Diesel or gas. overall they seem to be pretty solid tractors with a little maintance should last for many years . dds. just my two cents.

Pafarmer,
Lots of the 4020's were used pretty hard and are now due for a TOTAL overhaul. The good is most parts are available. The bad is they are way overpriced compared to similar tractors of the era. 190XT Allis, 1850 Oliver, 56series IH are all more tractors for far less money.

The 3010 and 4010 had the problem pto shafts. 4020 is GREAT ! but as mentioned alot of them are really worn out. What else can you buy and use and sell for as much if not more then you paid for it. You can find later model 30 series with a nice cab for what some 4020 sell for. Might be worth looking at the 30 series.

Pafarmer, I have two 4020's. One is a '64 (first year) and the other is a '71 with a factory Roll-Gard cab with air. Neither tractor will ever leave this farm. They are the most dependable pieces of machinery that I own. Like a friend of mine once said about 4020's: "You either had one, have one, or want one". Mike

It varies with how one would use them. I've two 4020 gassers. Since I no-till 100 % there have been a good tractor to used for mowing, spraying, planting, and all around general work. There have been very reliable for the past 20 plus years I've had them.

Ex,
I HAVE run those and several more. 4020= short coupled, rough riding, weak hydraulics, mediocre fuel economy, unique shifter unless it was the last design with the console, weak tranny compared to Allis power director, Oliver over/under/direct, Massey Multi-power, Case COM. A fair tractor but still way overpriced for a 35year old(at newest) machine.

I own 3 4020s and have run most of the others you mentioned. You have the facts backwards. If you think dry brakes, bull gear final drives, and 1950 hydraulics and transmissions are superior, go for it.Still lots of 4020s available for under $10,000.

My 2cents worth I personaly feel the 4020 diesel is one of JDs best. With production numbers of over 169,000 they are in demand and if were produced today would be a hit .Their lack of computerization and the way they handle are a joy to run. Being older if I had my choice I rather run my 71/4020 cutting hay as my 9530w/60ft. fieldcultivator if it 70 degrees and not too windy of course!

806= need step ladder to get on, impossible to shift gears, poorist hydralics ever made, ta constently out, just plain clumbsy to drive.

"I personaly feel the 4020 diesel is one of JDs best".............judging from the 4020s parked in various yards across Canada and the U.S. that are still in use, there are a few others that must agree with with your statement as well!

Looks like you've been around 'here' for several years; surely you've followed some of the previous posts? I started 'quittin' after 2001 and sold the last of the cows in 2005; sold most of the bigger stuff, but kept four 4020s; still piddle around a little......logging/sawmilling/firewood-cutting/clipping, etc, but really don't need more than 2 tractors. Two of the 4020s were bought new ('65 and '67); one other early, one late model; all synchro; all diesel. There were never (still aren't) any Oliver or MM in my part of the country, but I've either owned or used a sampling of most of the other brands. IMHO, they are head and shoulders above the others; they'll do pretty much anything a 30 h.p. tractor will do and we pulled a 6-bottom semi-mount plow with one for years. Never worked on an injection pump (got one I need to tear into), but anyone with modest skills and a manual can repair ANYTHING else on them. My opinion only.......worth just what you paid for it.

Glen,
Not at all, the man asked an opinion of 4020s. They are good tractors but by this time they are either worn out completely or way overpriced. In NIL you can buy 10-15 year newer tractors of any color including green for less than a decent (newer tires, good/new paint, cab, engine/trans reworked) 4020. That was meant to be my original point.
