met a new friend last fall and he has a 4020 John Deere power shift tractor with cab and a busted engine not sure of the year but he bought it for the wide front end for his tractor he wants to sell it to me with a narrow front end how much and where would I find a hole motor? I would like to mount a 237 corn picker on it so narrow front is ok also he hasnot given me a price whats it worth? also how whould you move it without tearing up the power shift trany. thanks Howard

there is a lever on the left side of the dash-pull it back towards you and it should lock in place. This disconnects the tranny.
To engage the tranny pull the lever further back and pull a button out below the dash. then you can slowly let the lever move all the way forward to engage the tranny.

Do you want an original motor or would a later 404 from a combine be ok? To move it you need to pull the transmission tow lever forward. It is located behind your right foot when setting in the seat.Value depends on the rest of the tractor and where it is located. More than likely $1000-2200 depending on the condition of the rest of it.I bought a running 4020 gas narrow front, dual outlets and good tires a few years ago for $2500.A better place to put this question would be the John Deere section below.

The lever beside the dash will disconnect the tranny from engine. But that is not the tow lever!! !!!!!! The TOW Lever is about 3 inches tall behind your foot when sitting in the seat.

I stand corrected. Had two of those 4020s with power shift 65-66 guess its been to many years since I used them. The other guys are right.

If buying a combine engine yours still should be acceptable as a core because it is a 4020 404.The combine 404 is a little different but will bolt in with a few changes.Tim S who post in the John Deere forum below has changed dozens of them and will help you with what you need.A combine 404 can usually be bought for $1200-2000.

I'm curious.. which don't? (I know they changed the shape of the lever at the side-console era, but I thought all serial numbers had the disconnect???)

that would be your other right. right or left is done by seating in the seat and looking over steering so your right foot would be near the lever this holds true for all American made cars trucks and most other equipment

Did one last year. I got lucky and found a 2000 hour 404 in a very early 7700 combine. It was a bolt-in deal. The later ones take a little extra work, but not bad. Easier since yours is a diesel to start with. I paid $1300 for the motor, and had to pull it from the combine myself.

Here's a parts photo of the trans disconnect lever. As stated it will be by left heel while setting in the seat

We have determined the disconnect is on left hand side now whats it worth?Year, tires,# of SCV s all are a factor. If power shift is good and the tractor is average As it probably doesn't have fenders I would think $2000 would be enough. The classified section had a 7770 motor not to long a ago.Tim S. or TxJim could help you as not all 404s are the same and some like early 7700s are near bolt in.I would a find {GOOD} motor first.Running depending on condition value is $5500 up. Salvage value is about $1000[$200 a ton] as fenders ,wide front are at least $1500.

There is a tow lever to near diff lock on right hand side of deck.I wouldn't not recommend towing any JD not running as brakes and steering are limited.Winching it on a trailer would be the farthest you could safely go.

I sure thought the trans/diff disconnect lever(parts photo above) is on LH side rear of platform. My neighbor has a '69 4020 PS that I can go inspect.

My local consignment sale has several a year for about $1500 and the last two combines my buddy bought cost about $2500 with running engines.Took out engines and a few other parts the sent combines to scrap.Buddy just bought a great running 6620 for $4000 to part out as it is rusted out. Those salvage yards are living very good of their markup, but they do have high overhead as well.I bought a 466 out of a late 7700 for a realitive $1500 last summer.
