4020 John Deere

I think it was in 1969 when the lift and hydraulic controls were moved from the dash (to the left of the steering wheel) to the right side of the seat on a console. I was wondering if John Deere or some other supplier ever made a kit to move the controls from the dash to a console on pre-1969 models? Thanks.

Anything is possible if you're willing to throw enough money at it, but I've never heard of such a 'kit'. There were some improvements made with the later tractors (scv, etc), but for ease of operation, I've never understood the allure. I've got tens of thousands of hours of 'seat time' on the old models and still own some of each. Left hand falls naturally to the controls while watching implements over your right shoulder on the old ones.

Make sure your seat is freed up and all working proper then you can get it adjusted so the dash controls are pretty close at hand.

I own 3 4020s, a 67 Diesel powershift, a 68 Diesel powershift, and a 64 Diesel syncrorange. All of my 4020 do not have the hydo Selective control valves next to the seat. John Deere didnt offer that until early 71-72 I can amagine its possible to build one with the side scv

I could never understand why John Deere followed I, H, and put the controls in the dash when for years John Deere models from the letter series all the way to last of the two cylinders had the control( mech. lift or hyd. lift) beside the seat. That was much handier than the IH style on the right side of the dash. One of the New Generation series designers even wanted a clean hood(no muffler or no air cleaner stack thru the hood) but was out voted. Had he had his way and if Deere would have keep the "side consul" the New Generation would have been complete. My dad had farmall tractors and one of our neighbors had Deere 2-cylinders and there was no question in my mind that the lift control beside the seat(the orignal "side consul"} were much handier. Thankyou for listening to my humble observasions(sp.?). Armand

Maybe it was so you had something to do with your right hand after being used to a hand clutch? I agree, linkages were much more complicated with controls on dash.

Actually the linkages were much simpler on the early 4020. The hydraulic valves were just in front of the handles. Very simple linkage, longer controlled pipes to the connections.

When the side console came out beginning with serial 201,000 in 1969, the whole remote valve scheme was new, valves down back, directly connected to the hose connections, with the rabbit/turtle rate controls handy. And with minor modifications they stuck with the same scheme for decades.

I suppose one could change. I can think of better ways to do remote valves and would if I needed another remote valve.

I had a 4010 that had the hyd moved to the side. They moved the controls to the back and used a hose to hook them up with.

I made a conversion consol 9 years ago thought it was a good idea, but could,nt make it cost efective, and it didn't work out with a ROPS,,messed around with it for a while and put it up on the back shelf,,some times good ideas don't work out...
