4020 loader

Planning a loader for my 4020 JD. It does have a cab, and is a 1972 model with side console. I"m looking for recommendations for a loader. My brother has a 158JD on his 4430 and thinks that is the only way to go. I definitely want something quick-tach. I"ve considered Allied 595,
Westendorf WL-42, and Koyker ?model. Should I stick with the Deere?

Bob,We have a Koyker 565, on a 4230 open-station. Same frame as your 4020. will bolt right up. It is JD green so it looks good. Bucket is quick-tach, not the bucket mount. It mounts up in a similar configuration as the JD158.
Only part I do not like is the main mounts, They seem light to me, I persinally would like to have seen them built heavier. as far a gereral loader work they will do nicely. Just don't go to horsein this or any other loader into hard soil, calachie or the like.
The quick-tach bucket allows you to change from bucket to bale spear in just a couple of minutes.
We Do not have a Joy-stick, just use the console remotes for the loader. OBTW we had a 3rd remote added to this 4230 cost us about $800. I would recomend it if your console has an open position.
Though adding a Joy-stick for the loader will leave the remotes free for other applications, ie batwing shredder, disk, etc, etc.

I had a 158 on my 4020. It was a great loader, and I enjoyed its long reach.

If you want short reach, the 148 is good enough. the 158 sticks about 6 feet past the front wheels. The 168 is out of the question for the 4020.

Hi Bob,

I put a JD 720 loader on my 71 4000 and love it. I was going to buy a 148 but they had stopped making them and the 720 was the replacment, this was 5 or 6 years ago.

It is easy on and off and has quick attach bucket and bale fork. This loader is strong and light. Some of the others you mention in my opinon are too heavy.

Have an Allied 595 on a JD 2750 open station. Absolutely love it. 5 minutes max to put on or off.

I have a Koyker 565 on a 4020, I really like it. I use a set of self fabricated hay forks though, almost never use the bucket. I like the reach and height. I can load a gooseneck trailer from one side, double stacking. On a semi I have to load from both sides, though. Also use it to load 2 round bales at a time in the back of semi van trailers. Absolutely NO complaint from me on this loader and I have used it a bunch. Have never taken it off this tractor since it was first put on. JBDyer

Yep, the easiest to put on and take off you will find. Built very heavy as well. I have two of them, and would never again consider any other.

My unkle has a wetorndorf on his 4010JD.5min max and you can drop the loader, all you have to do is disconect the hoses. Changing the buket is even faster, just set the atachment down where you want it, pull two levers an backaway they atomatikly lock again when you pick up you bail spear, buket, etc....

Don't overlook a Deere 48 loader if you can find a good one.Wish I still had the one I sold several years ago. Have a 148 now and it is a good one, but the 48 was a LOT quicker and easier to mount and dismount.

I have a K-5 Koyker and I hate it. The manufactuer and I definatly have different Idea what constitutes quick-tach.

I had a Koyker 310 I think was my model # (plant is in S. Dakota) also on a 4010. Once I got it installed (by myself with no lift) it was ok. Used the bucket and separate hay spike attachments. Interchanging the implements was easier than on the old Deere 158 I had on a 4020 which had 4 connect points.

Had plenty of reach (could stab the top bail off a double bailed 18 wheeler and reach the other side of the lower layer which was side by side), plenty of lift capacity, and smooth operation. Paid about $3600 for it several years ago......before the price of steel went up.
