4020 Starter issue?

I have a 4020 that I bought this spring.I've been very happy with it, but during hay season I noticed that sometimes the starter would drag a little, that went on a while, and eventually now it just clicks. Before it always seemed to get better,but not now. I've been coast starting it, of course I'm not proud of that

I put put jumpers on each batter and hooked them to two vehicles thinking it would jump start, even then it just clicks and acts like I don't even have a darned batter on there. I checked the post connnections, all good. Any ideas? I know I've got to do some detective work, but this board is usually very good at getting me pointed in the right direction. When I was jumping it the motor might turn over once if I was lucky. Thanks!

Sounds like its a brush or armature problem. The brushes do wear down. Often the commutator needs turning when the brushes are replaced and the brushes always should be fitted to the commutator. My local auto electric shop does them regularly and inexpensively.

It takes a long extension or a bent box end to reach the bolt nestled between the starter and the engine block.

Rebuild it, probably around 200 to 300 dollars or take a chance with a used one.

Check the batteries. They may have boiled dry in the summer heat. The charging voltage should be checked.

First thing to do is check the batteries with a good tester. That 24 volt system is a battery killer to begin with.
Make sure the ends are good and all connections tight, check your cables, take the floor board off and look at them, get new cable if they look bad. If you just bought it, replace if any question then you will know the cables and ends are good.
My thinking is you have two bad batteries, it may be the starter but we have had two 4020D's for as long as I can remember them being here, Im 40, and only had the starter off of 1 and that was self induced check book pain.

I had a similar issue with a 4010. I thought it was the starter, took it off and had it checked by a starter/alt. shop - starter was just fine. The starter guy (someone that had been wiring starters for about 35 years) said it was grounding. Sure enough, after I replaced the grounding cables (which looked just fine), the clicking was gone and fired right up.

I should also point out that I had a short in the light switch that produced a slow drain over a few week time - I got that issue fixed too.

Finally, either your battries are shot or in need of a good charge (easy enought to test or have the parts shop test them). If they need a charge, either use a good one you have or take to someone that has a good, quality slow charge.
