4020 starter

Hi all,

I have a John Deere 4020 gas with 12 volt system serial number 115xxx.

It's going to need a new starter soon and the one on it has a housing number of 1107320. Seems that number is for a Chevrolet 327. I see several different aftermarket/rebuilt starters listed for it. Is the only difference the number of teeth and 12V vs 24V? I see some with the housing of the starter the same size as the drive housing (bolts on the inside) and some with the housing smaller (bolts on the outside). Is one better than the other?

Any help is appreciated

Your starter is obviously a rebuilt and a Chevy starter "belly" was used in assemblng it without the number being ground off, a "real" Chevy 327 starter won't fit a 4020.

The difference in tooth count is because a "lighter" starter drive and ring gear is used on the gassers vs. the diesels.

I would assume the starters with the long bolts that hold them together are gear reduction units.

There have been reports of "nose cone" breakage happening with certain aftermarket gear reduction starters with light duty aluminum parts, and others have been very satisfied with the units they've installed.

Google search 4020 gear reduction starter. Cheap and works awesome. Spins over much faster. You can buy two for what one cost to rebuild one original.

wore out, thanks for the comment.

Tx Jim, thanks for looking that up. I looked at the catalog but saw the starter was substituted and not knowing if my starter is the correct one decided to ask her.

jdjim, thanks. That looks like a couple I've seen. The price was lower than most but didn't know much beyond that. Can I ask where you got yours? Had it long?

Yes Gary. I’m in Canada. Ordered it off amazon...Not something I do very often. It’s only been about two years. Same concept as on our 8R tractors. Gear reduction spins it over faster and effortlessly. Good luck.

I put one on a 4000 three years ago.The original started needed some work so I went with the gear reduction. Has worked very good.

The factory stater for a gas 4020 is a Delco 10 MT Heavy Duty the same series is used on the HP 327. The head is different and I believe the drive. The other interesting fact is the 20 MT series Delco will interchange the head and drive with the 10 MT series HD if the rotation is correct. I ran a starter for a 318 Detroit on my 4020 gas for 20 years just changed the head and drive. A weak set of batteries finally smoked it. I found a place on the internet that sold me a 20 MT Delco for about $200, powered by two batteries and a remote solenoid it will hot start my 4020 and I still have the MS carb.
