I have a 69 4020 that pops out of 2nd and 5th. Had
top shaft rebuilt, and after reinstalling tractor
is still popping out of gear. On the linkage how
do you adjust to make sure your not going to far?
Is there any thing else I need to check?

Disconnect the shift rod, jiggle the shifter to be sure the detent is centered in the slot. Then adjust the length of the shift rod to where it is a slip fit.

There is a strong chance that you have a mis-matched drive collar on the top shaft, this is a bit of a confuseing area, there are two collars offered when you hold them up together you can see that the recieveing area of the gear is closer to the end than the other, part of the shift improveing kit offered, I don't have the part numbers handy right now but "I have been there" this 'wrong' combination keeps the drum from going onto the collar far enough, only about 3/16 diference but it won't work out.
