I'm doing a little research for my uncle. He has a late 60's 4020 diesel with turbo. he is wanting to change the two six volt batteries setup for one 12v. can you get enough cranking amps in one 12V? has anyone had any luck doing this? Thanks

I did this with a 4620. Mounted a 1050 amp battery as close to the starter as possible, with cables only a foot or so long. works great--much better than the 2 6 volt batteries under the platform, with the necessary looooong cables for that setup.

u should put 2 12 volt batteries in. just run both + cables to starter and - to frame

On my late 4020D, there's a single 12V "Big Rig" truck battery sitting ON the platform in front of the seat. Works fine if you can put up with less foot room.

It's a single 4D-XHD battery with 1000 CCAs. Both battery cables are 2/0 and are 24" long. Boy does she turn over now!.

yes you can do 12v battries, Get 2 that will go in the box and hook the + to + to starter and - to - to frame,

I did that in my 4000 it starts up good than two 6v.

you sure its got 6 volt batteries.
the 4020D is a 24 volt system with 2 (12) volt batteries that put 24v to the starter and run everything else on 12v split.
if it has 2 6v and not spinning up good, theres the problem

if the tractor still has the generator you dont want to do that.
4020's are pos ground
