4020D light problem.

A good friend of mine had the lights go out on his 1966 4020 so he changed the fuse. Now when the engine is up over half throttle the lights come on very bright, but if it is idling they go out. The batteries are excellent and start the tractor every time without effort. Anyone have any ideas what his problem is? On behalf of him, thank you for your help in advance.

Check for shorts/bare live wires. Check for corrosion at connection points. Check grounding of lights. Clean terminals at battery?

Check the ground connections, especially the one between the two batteries. Sometimes there is a fuse in that last circuit.

NY986, I think he has checked all the connections and all the lights go bright and dark together as the engine is speeded up or slowed down. The tractor has all new battery cables and connections. His biggest problem is loading round bales at night and has to slow the motor down next to the wagon , the light go out and he loses sight of the load. Also the batteries are not lossing their charge when the tractor is shut off. Thanks for your quick response.

If it has a 24 volt system, there is a small ground cable on the clutch side battery that goes to the side of the transmission case. Sometimes it will corrode or burn off, and will cause all kinds of problems like you're having.

Is this fuse connected to the mid point tie between the batteries. And runs to the tractor chassis to make a return path for the +12V and -12V loads?
With a generator it quits charging at low engine rpms. An old worn original pulley and a glazed belt, no matter how tight will slip.

Had the same problem on my 67. It was the generator. Changed to a 24v alternator and problem solved and didnt have near the battery troubles I had before.
