403 diesel?

Anybody ever try to put the 6 inch crank out of a 403 gas motor in a 336 diesel? Can this be done? You would have to use the short diesel jugs with short pistons from welters. If this would work you would have a powerhouse

Serial number books indicate only 5 D605 engines were made in 1955 only. Definitely a rare bird if the serial number lists are correct. Sure wouldn't want to part something like that out if I found one.

Didnt they also make a 1210 (1210A?) stationary engine which was 2 605s side by side. I know I had seen a picture once, unless I was dreaming lol.

there were more than just 5, I was told there was around 90 made. A dealer told me it was the starting point to making the D585

Why not a 403 diesel? tall jugs, later model heads, should be able to mount the injection pump where the mag would go, small turbo charger....Hmmm....might be quite the torque monster. Ya think the bottom end could handle all the extra compression?

Somewhere I had heard that MM had experimented with a 403 in the M670 Super as an upgrade from the M670 with the 336. I am sure they would have offered it as a diesel, in addition to gas and LP, but I am not sure if they ever made a production D403.

Freddy,
Very interesting. I'd find it hard to believe it would be the same D605 made in 1955 that was used for D585 development in the late 60's. I suspect some confusion around the HD605 (Heavy Duty 605 LP or Natural Gas) built around the same time as the D585. It's serial number prefix (342) is one number away from the D585 (343) that was slated for G1000 use but was never used. Just a theory on my part as I've run across several people that thought an HD605 was a diesel.

I have an factory ad for the 605D power unit. I'd love to actually find one. Super M670 D403 engines were mentioned here. Apparently if you look in an owner's manual, there is a photo of a M670 prototype with D403 used for illustration purposes. They added a counterbalancer to the crankcase. Vibration was an issue not to mention it could out run a G900 D425 on the dyno.

To answer your question, yes it can be done. A superb example is available on youtube showing a turbo version in a 5-star on the pulling track. Wow! You may want to try that link! The fella called me a couple years back asking how to get more power out of a 5-star diesel. I told him to try a G crank and cross his fingers. He replied that he did and added a turbo...just couldn't keep a head gasket in the thing. By the video, it looks like he figured it out. Beyond my limited expertise!
