4030 JD PROS OR CONS

JUST WANDERING IF ANY OF YOU GUYS EVER HAD AN 4030 , I WAS COMPARING A 4030 TO A LATE MODLE 3020, I KNOW THE 4030 IS MORE HP BUT THERE ABOUT THE SAME PRICE OR CHEAPER THAN THE LATE MODLE 3020.

The 4030 was certainly a good machine. They are a Waterloo built tractor with a Dubuque built engine. The 329 engine is perhaps a little more reliable than the old four cylinder in the 3020, and much easier to get parts.

The 4030 carries all the options of all the other 30 series tractors including sound guard body and quad range transmission allowing it to rise above the 3020. The 4030 also has a wet clutch and a sturdy front axle which puts it ahead of a 3020 for a loader tractor.

The 6329 Dubuque powerplant is reliable and starts fairly well in the cold. It's easy on fuel, but does lack that classic lugging ability that was offered by the Waterloo engines of the time. Our 4030 was repowered with a 4400 combine engine that makes a few more horsepower than the factory engine. It made it a little peppier, but still lacks that mid to low range torque. These engines also have a bad history of having rust holes in the piston liners. This is because of maintenance neglect. They require scheduled services including coolant change/water conditioner.

As for an all around opinion... I'd dare to sat that the 4030 was one of the best 85 horsepower tractor of the time. Remember that when you are looking that most 30 series tractors are worn out now. They have lots of years of abuse under their belt. Expect to have to work on it.

Good luck finding a good Generation II tractor (30 series). The reason why I bid you good luck is because these tractors were used all up until there was nothing left to them. You can still find a few good 30 series tractors, and the only faults they had were they sometimes did not want to start in colder weather.

you're comparing basketballs to baseballs with the 4030 and 3020. the 4020 is more equivalent to a 4030, but you can't go wrong either way!

Really the 4020 really shares no characteristics with the 4030 except for the fact that it has a 6 cylinder engine, green paint, and a "40" in the beginning...oh and the seat is the same if you dont have a SGB. The 4030 horsepower splits the 3020 and 4020 pretty much right in the middle. A 4020 is no closer than a 3020 to a 4030. I've spent lots of time on both. They are different critters, however, still in the same class.

If you are looking for a "Good" 4030 that will not be wore out. I am in the process of putting together a nice tractor that will be finished this next spring. It will look, function and operate like a new one when I am done. Finish/paint work will also be premier. It will not be the least expensive one you will find but I would promise you that you will not find a better one.
