4030 missing

Hi,

I recently overahauled a 329 in a 4030. Did complete overhaul, sleeves, pistons, bearings, cut head, redid valves, and new injectors. After starting it it seems to sound ok but smokes (blue), and misses when throttling up quickly. Rechecked the valves and it has new air filters. Can anybody help me? I did not change anything with the timing. Could it possibly be that the pump is weak and with the new injectos not letting them break properly??

It sounds like retarded timing.........could be pump related, possible issues with the injection pump advance or delivery valve(if it has one)??
May not hurt to check static timing anyway..........

Other forum members will have the particulars.........

I cracked the lines one by one and found what I thought was a bad injector on number 5, went to the dealer and got another. Sort of helped but 6 seemes not right either. Thinking that it can't be another injector is why i'm leaning to the pump. Should I take all the new injectors to the dealer and get them checked??

Sounds like the timing advance isn't set right. Ten minute job to check and adjust with the proper tools. They need to be adjusted every few years or they get sluggish. When the engine is not going as far and quickly as it should - the engine will skip and smoke whenver you try to rev it up until you either get it good and hot - or put a load on it.

Your pump ought to be either a JDB633AJ2594 or a JDB633MB2594.

John Deere is one of the few companies to spend the extra money on the externally adjustable advance - so you ought to take advantage of it.

You can bump up the static timing just by loosening the pump and rotating it a bit (while not running). But . . . that changes all the timimg - when engine is cranking and when running at high RPM.

To check advance timing - you stick a plastic $5 window on the pump - run the engine and adjust via the little trimmer screw and lock nut sticking out of the pump.

Your's is supposed to be working like this . . .
1000 engine RPM - 2 engine degrees advance
1500 engine RPM - 10 engine degrees advance
2000 engine RPM - 22-24 engine degrees advance

I mention "engine RPM" and "engine degrees" because all original specs are given in "pump RPM" and "pump degree." And, the pump only runs half engine speed - so 1 pump degree equals 2 engine degrees . . . and 500 pump RPM equals 1000 engine RPM.

On a rotary injection pump the cylinder in front of the one that is missing can have too low cracking pressure and rotary pump will not pick up enough fuel to make next cylinder fire. You said (I think No. five) In firing order that would be no.1.I ran into this one time on JD.570 motor grader. It had 329 engine. They were using on paving crew and were on us to get running.I always checked cracking pressure on new injectors.Haven't found many bad but have found a few.I have never had this happen to me again.Another time sent head to machine shop to have valves ground.Installed head engine missed machine shop had tagged valves left tag wire on one valve in rested on seat and head of valve and it made it miss.

I did a 329 in a 2840 and had a similar experience. Ran good before didn't smoke bad just had sleeve cavitation. after overhaul it smoked terrible but not too bad when warmed up. I talked to my pump shop and he said the pump type on mine were prone to wear inside throwing off the timing. He said either spend a bunch on money on the pump or just turn it a wee bit past the marks. I turned the pump as he said. I can't remember which way ? and all was fine again.
