4040 engine

I have a 4040 that I bought and don't know too much about. I know these have a 404 engine from the factory. Mine has the serial # tag upside down on the engine. I was told over the weekend that they do that to combine engines. Is this true? It has a powershift transmission. I have been told that these won't hold up to using them for a pulling tractor. My question is why? I know where there is a 4840 PS putting out 250 HP and has no issues with the tranny. I'm thinking if I can get 250 HP out of that little tractor that would make a heck of a pulling tractor. Anybody tried this?

It depends a lot on how light you can get it. In 10,000 you would be marginally competitive at 250 HP, In the 11,500 or 12,000 you would need more power.

I'm thinking I can get it lower than that on weight. With stamped steel wheels should be able to get to like 8500lbs.

Since when did a 4040 come from the factory with a 404?

You"d be able to get that under 7,500 easy but would still be about 3-4 hundred HP short of competing with anything around here in a 10K or over class.

On you tube there is a 4020 pulling at 5500 so a 4040 should be able to get to 6000 6500. But you will need to take off everything that doesn't make it move. Surely the trans will take 400 hp. But it might be cheaper to start with a junk 4010, Late model 466 combine engines are selling for 2500 with everything. Their oil pump drives from the crankshaft, instead of the camshaft so the tack won't work on a 30 40 or 50 series.

There’s a 4040 that’s very competitive in the 12000 lb class that is NA, beats 200-300 horsepower tractors all the time. But it’s a dead weight pull. But still pulling just under 500% percent, the last pull he was at the last round pulling 59000lbs
