Ok i give up,removed the distributor from my 41 9n, determined that it needs new points, first time i have worked on one of this type distributor.there are 2 screws holding the points down, one at the top & one at the bottom. also a screw in the middle that seems to be some sort of an eccentric for adjusting the points.the middle screw wont come out and the points wont slip over it. what gives? also under the brass screw for the condensor wire there is a stack of strips of cardboard, what would that be for? HELP. thanks for your time. Jim

The center screw does not come out,the center hole in points should slip over it,the cardboard thingy insulates cond wire from shorting to ground.I too am from Iowa and did my front mnt. dist last fall,if you were close i could show you first hand. Tim Stanton Ia

Back in my day[makes me sound old],all cars had points. To a person not of that era, points are something foreign to them. All points have to have a locking mechanism,an adjuster, which can be eccentric screw, tabs adjusted with a screwdriver, etc, and an attachment for an electric wire to the coil.Just about every type of arrangement has been tried, finally staying with the arrangement you see in the "modern"dist in the "N"s.---lha

Just for discussion.....
(and to make sure you don't tell anything "wrong" in public)

The Chevy points distributor, with the little opening window, to set the dwell, with an allen wrench type tool, was the "FAR SUPERIOR" way of mounting, and setting points.

Thanks tim, the problem is,the points will not slip over the adjustment screw.im from adel ia. about 20 mi. west of des moines. where is stanton? who knows what has been done to these tractors when theyre 70 years old. thanks Jim

Jim, It's not unusual for poorly crafted, offshore parts not to fit. Here are some NAPA part numbers that should fit better than what you now have:

Front Mount Distributor

Points:
NAPA #CS35 Echlin
Standard Ignition Blue Streak #FD-6769X (Premium)

Condenser:
NAPA #FA200
Standard Ignition #FD-71

Rotor:
NAPA #FA300
Standard Ignition #FD-104

Distributor Cap:
NAPA #FA350
Standard Ignition #FD-126

Coil IC670 (supposedly 6v, but check resistance or ask)

OEM style ballast resistor: ICR40

I finally got the points out & installed a new set from napa. i found out there is a plastic insulator that is supposed to go where mine was insulated with strips of cardboard. i just have to find a source for it. thanks. Jim
