I have a 41 B that I picked up just to save from going to scrap. What I really planned to get was an unstyled B just because I really like the looks of them. Before some may criticize me for butchering something, remember, I saved it from the scrap yard. What I have been thinking of doing is keeping this with the 6 speed trans. and putting an unstyled front end on it. Then I have the "looks" I wanted, and have the benefit of the better trans. so I can keep up in tractor drives and such. If I were to do this, what all would I have to gather up for parts to make it happen. By the way, my sheetmetal is very rough currently. Thank you.

You would be better off if it was an A as more things interchange on the A's.

Your going to have to custom make many things. You are better off just finding what you want and then sell parts off what you have.

I was just reading that the 39 B was a left over from the 38 unstyled so I bet it would be pretty do-able if you could get an unstyled pedistal, hood and radiator.

What part of the country are you located? I live in Northern Indiana and have an unstyled B front pedestal I would sell pretty reasonable. Bob

But the 39 and 40 only had 4 speeds. He's looking to get road gear. Not sure if there was a Behlan (sp) overdrive for the unstyled B's. I had a 1940 that had it.

Maybe that's what you should look for, the overdrive kit, instead of mixing and matching tractors (nothing wrong with that, just that it might be easier for you to bolt on a few gears)

Just for your reference, in your possible attempt to mix up some parts to make a frankentractor. A 39 and 40 B are not carryovers from the unstyled tractors, and are unlike the 41 on up. They were a completely new tractor from the ground up. The 39 A was a carryover from the unstyled A, basically from the valve cover back. However, everything that touches the radiator on a 39, is 39 only. The frame is a couple inches longer on a 39.
An unstyled B with a Behlen overdrive is a pretty slick unit.

Sounds like an interesting project. There's differences in the water pipes, fanshaft length, steering shaft, etc. but if you have access to enough unstyled parts and a machine shop, I'd give it a try. Should be fun, and you're not destroying anything that wasn't scheduled for scrap in the first place.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers, but I disagree with many of you. If you"ve ever looked at a 39 B there are many parts that are interchangeable, exception being the engine. To make your styled B look like an unstyled you"ll need a front pedistal (the bolt pattern is the same I believe so you should be able to use yours), a radiator, hood, gas tank and depending on if yours was factory electric start, you may need a steering post. Big thing with the unstyled sheet metal is to get the LONG frame parts (about mid 37-up till end of unstyled production.)Yes, you"ll have to do some fabbing, rear hood mount and some plumbing, but nothing that can"t be overcome.

Many of the parts may be interchangeable, they just are not the same parts. Almost all of the components on a 39 B are a different part and casting number than on a 38. Thus they were all new tractors from the ground up, not carryovers, as the 39 A was.
I don"t know B"s in detail, but if they followed along the same lines as the A, the frame was made longer, and with it the fanshaft and related parts.
