I was dressing up a small area around my well never pushing more than a wheelbarrow of sand at a time when I went to back up one more time, I pull the shuttle to reverse and nothing happens... I give it some fuel and it revs up like neutral, so I flip it up to FWD and back to REV and still nothing...fearing an oil loss situation I shut it off and look under...dry as a bone, I try to restart and it wont roll, lights all come on and it acts like normal but wont turn over..I pull the fuse cover off and check the trans fuse its fine, I dont know where the neutral switch/s are and Im also wondering if one of the DE-clutch buttons has shorted, does anyone know if these machines will start with one of the buttons pushed? dont have a troubleshooting section in either one of my books any clues would be appreciated
, Thanx OCG

Can't speak with definite authority on a Cat, but I believe most modern machines use the switches in the control lever (FNR lever and shift controller)which is usually one lever with a rotary control for speeds, for the neutral start as well as the reverse alarm. There arent actual neutral start switches and reverse alarm switches on the transmission,as most modern backhoes are electrically controlled by solenoids. If the switch fails "it" may not think its in neutral and won't start... and the problem started when the reverse switch failed. If forward worked but not reverse initially, I'd lean towards the shift controller being an issue... if neither forward or reverse worked, I'd look at one of the de-clutch switches or wiring to it.. If theres one on the loader control lever, I'd start with that one as I've see the wiring break where the lever flexes.. This is on other brands...not Cat, but electrically I believe there are similarities.

Im leaning toward the declutch control my self (prob cause it would be the easiest/cheapest fix)
I wish I knew for sure if it should start or not with the button pushed, I might have to find one running somewhere and get the guy to try it..
Thanxs for your thoughts and wish me luck..OCG

Check and clean all battery and cable connections. I was having problems with my skid steer where if I turned the lights on, after up to 20 minutes, I would lose all electrical power until I shut the light switch off for a minute or so and then when I turned it back on, the lights and everything else worked again. Sometimes the starter wouldn't turn over as well. Dave
