420 Steering Problem

'57 420W- has a lot of slack or slop in the steering. The biggest culprit at this point is the connection between the steering shaft and the worm gear. The steering shaft moves nearly a quarter turn before the worm starts to move. I see on eBay that there is a weld on end to fix this, but I'm wondering if there are other methods as well. Just trying to get all the facts before I start throwing money around.

It's not the pins. It's the connector from the steering shaft coming from the steering wheel and the connection to the worm on the outside of the gear box.

You'll need to separate the steering tube from the worm shaft to determine what you need to fix it. It could be the tube end you mentioned, worm, woodruff key or all three.

Look up Steiner Tractor Parts on internet-they offer a new coupler (assuming yours is worn badly as mine was, and input shaft to box is not worn too badly) for the front of the steering shaft. You hacksaw the old one off the front of the steering shaft (cutting just the length of new coupler off) and weld the new one on. The new part must be lined up with the steering shaft so you have no wobble in the joint (use a V block to align parts).

The allen head screw that tightens the clamp on the end of the steering shaft, on the end of the worm gear passes through a groove cut into the end of the worm gear. that could be worn from the set screw not being tight. Or as it was just said on here, the clamp on the end of the steering shaft is worn. Pull it apart and see what see whats going on..
