420U Spindle Conundrum

I hope to get some help in finding a spindle.

Recently, my left front wheel fell off and I found the spindle has cracked clean through like it was cut with a laser.

I found a replacement from a good guy in California, but when I got it the replacement was quite a bit longer.

The vertical shaft from the "knuckle" to the end of the spline is about 7 1/8" long. The ones I can find are a little over 13"

Does anybody know where I can find the correct one for my machine?

If the only difference is the length of the shaft, then I would expect that a machine shop would be able to modify the longer one to have the splines as required in the right place.

It looks like it had a woodruff key through it.
I can't figure it out. The break is so smooth and there's that rust line that looks like a key in a slot.

The failure you had on the spindle is very typical of fatigue in steel loaded basically in one direction. Both sides of it will crack at the weld zone (and grow with tractor use) until failure occurs. The crack will be smooth. The center section is the final failure zone and will be rough.
This is a rough explanation of the fatigue process. Its a little more complicated than this.

Wouldn't the longer spindle have to be for vegetable model tractor?

There is a difference in the spindle length between a utility & standard. I'm betting the long one you bought,is from a standard, not utility.

Never realized there were 7 different spindles for these. That would make measuring a must.
