4230 hydraulics

I recently purchased a 4230 that I intended to spray with. The sprayer had a hydraulic motor that worked good. I recently put a WL42 loader on it and when I raise the loader at less than 1500 rpms it chatters and shakes. I have changed hydraulic filter cleaned a suction for the charge pump and changed the hydraulic couplers to points.I cant tell any of it helped. any ideas?

Does the loader have an open or closed center valve? It needs to be a closed center, otherwise it is flowing all the pump can put out even with no other hydraulic functions being used.

I don't think the extra tank is the way to go,,make sure your loader valve is not flowing oil through when it's centered, if it is see why, it could be an open center valve or the power beyond seal could be blown, if all that checks out I would change the trans. pump,,if it's been in there for years it's most likely worn bad...

Works better with a dedicated loader joystick. Supplied from a power beyond connection and returned to a ported filter cover.

Independent valve doesn't make as much difference on a 30 series and up Waterloo tractor as trans pump pumps oil all the time engine is running unlike the 10 or 20 series syncro-range trans tractors!!!!!!!!!!

All true but..........
The trans charge pump will be loosing capacity by this time & age. Plus some transmission seals will be getting shrunk & hard causing extra demand on the trans pump.

Going to miss you txjim for 2-1/2 weeks. Going to send the eldest lad up there too for a education in hunting and fishing in the far north.
I'm counting on you to keep things on the straight and narrow around here in my absence.

Maybe Mr Henning's 4230 has had the upgraded(higher cap.) trans pump installed that you keep advising posters of!!!!!!!! He-He

Have a safe and enjoyable hunting trip with your son.

BTW there's a lot more knowledgeable people on this forum than me and that includes YOU.

The High capacity pump is all that is offered from Deere now days...I'm sideing with B&D a little here,, older Deere SCV's don't flow all that good,,a separate valve plumbed directly into the system is better way for sure...

Tim
I agree that an ind valve offers more hyd flow to a frt end loader and if used frequently is better.

But if a farmer only sparingly uses a loader to feed hay or pick-up an object the SCV operated loader will do that task very well at a lot less $$$$$$$$$.

JD offered SCV operated loaders from the factory for over 40 years so it can't be all that bad.

That's true for a low usage, low budget operation which we call "Hoby Farmers"...It's even more true when the loader is on a cab tractor...I was just priceing a loader valve from Deere it was $1150,,got one from the hydro shop for $350, a re-mote cable valve set up would be "way" more yet..

the 20&30 series jd,s had the trans pump on the end of the transmission top shaft , every time you push in the clutch the top shaft stops turning , not much you can do to help that part of it, you may simply have a sticking stroke control valve in the main pump, they are around 100 bucks plus the install labour, a good mechanic can change it without removing the pump , hell even i can do it

THIS 4230 HAS A SYNCRO-RANGE TRANSMISSION IF THAT MAKES ANY DIFFERANCE. CAN YOU EXPLAIN MORE ABOUT THESE STROKE VALVES? THANKS

Incorrect statement
30,40,50 & 55 series rowcrop tractor without powershift trans have a trans pump driven from a hex shaft that sticks into flywheel and pumps trans oil anytime engine is running.

Is the probable cause this charge pump being wore out not supplying enough oil to the main pump? How big a job is it to replace? Can I flowrate this pump? Would adding a hydraulic tank compensate for the oil flow.It is a 74 4230
with a cab and syncro mesh transmission. thanks

Trans pump can be flowrated. I think 5gpm is alright. Pump can wear out but internal leaks can also rob pump output. Pump can be R&R by removing rockshaft housing with R&R of SGB(cab)

The stroke control valve is in main hyd frt located in frt of engine. It's in the head of the pump on the bottom LH side. It controls the stand-by psi and is adjustable. With enough use it can wear out just like everything else causing hyd problems.
