424 Diesel (Bleeding System)

Good morning gentleman!!! I have searched the internet for tips when attempting to bleed a gravity fed diesel system without any luck. On my 424 I have fuel at the filter but cannot get fuel anywhere else in the system. I have historically done well with systems that contain a lift pump. More specifically on my Massey Ferguson tractors. However with this one I just cannot get it going. Thank you!!!

Did you recently change fuel filters?
If you have then look a thread in the link below:

So you don't get any fuel out the bottom or top bleed screw on the CAV/DPA injection pump?
There is a filter on the input o the pump, item #84 in photo below, be cautious if you remove item #79 as there are some small springs etc that have to be re-installed correctly.
If you have an air compressor available, you can stick an air gun in the fuel tank filler cap and use a clean rag to seal around it and give it some positive air pressure.
IH Louisville, KY, USA, saved a few $$ by eliminating the lift pump that was used on older model.

Was that fuel filter original equipment? Looks like one from a John Deere Industrial engine.
According to Caseih.com parts 424 Diesel, the fuel filter, item #20 was spin on type, p/n 393201R91.
I have never worked on an IH BD-154 Diesel with CAV/DPA fuel system that didn't have lift pump.

Sadly no it was a modification made back when my family was relevant in the farming industry back in the 80's. Back in those days it breaks and you just do a field mod to keep it going. I really wanted to get it back to original but cannot find part #18 ANYWHERE.

Just FYI, incase this isn’t obvious to you here is one thing I think I am seeing. The fitting sticking out of the upper right of the filter base in your photo looks suspiciously like a threaded adapter bushing with a grease zerk screwed into it for a plug. So if you are loosening that thinking that is a bleeder I would question that. Not sure if you are aware of this but diesel injection pumps which set for a period of time, such as “years,” often the fuel setting in them takes on some changes and then allows close fitting parts ine the pump to stick so it no longer can pump high pressure fuel to the injectors. I would loosen the fuel line where it connects to the injection pump on the other side of the engine a see if you have fuel there.

What does "at the filter" mean exactly? Going in but not coming out? Going in and coming out? If it's not coming out of the filter, filter's plugged. The way that one looks it's been on there a long long time and has been used to wipe someone's arse more than once. It may behoove you to replace it.

That it's the wrong filter is irrelevant. A fuel filter is a fuel filter. It'll work, if it's clear enough to let fuel through.

Take the line loose at the next connection downstream. Do you get fuel there? If you don't there's a blockage somewhere between the last place you got fuel, and the next connection.

You can't find part #18 "ANYWHERE?" Where did you look? Have you tried calling any salvage yards or did you just do a google search? I would bet you dollars to donuts that JP Tractor Salvage has at least one. What is wrong with the one on the side of the engine now?

By at the filter I mean diesel is flowing into the filter fine with a full filter. As far as being used to clean the rectal area? That is a distinct possibility!! In regards to finding that bracket I have called places I have used in the past without luck. In regards to salvage yards those are hard to find locally here in California. However thanks for the connection with JP Tractor Salvage!!!
