I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT HOW TO REPAIR MY GLOW PLUGS. OR IF THERE IS AND AFTER MARKET KIT THAT I COULD REPLACE THEM WITH.

I have a 424 diesel. The glow plugs each effectively have TWO terminals and are connected in SERIES, with power fed to the back GP and one side of the front GP is grounded.

There is a dash-mounted indicator/resistor in series with the GP's.

What problem are you having... if the resistor or even ONE GP fail none will work.

Your system is relatively easy to diagnose and parts are readily available to repair it to "as-new" function.

I have heard of guys making up an adapter to bush down the GP mounting hole to accept modern 10MM GP's that have a dual-coil system that allows them to be connected in PARALLEL, allows quick heating, and, at the same time limits overheating/damage.

I DO NOT know of a source for the adapters, although it's certainly possible there's some sources "out there". I have considered doing this, and could make my own adapters and would use Bosch dual-coil GP's intended for GM 6.2/6.5 diesels.

Your CIH dealer will be able to get any pats you may need.

With a test light, verify that there's power to the back GP when the switch is depressed, then on to the next one forward. The light will be dimmer as you move forward down the series string of GP's.

Or, test each GP with an Ohmmeter. Check between the threaded stud and the washer next to the porcelain insulator. You are looking for very LOW resistance, just a couple of Ohms vs. "infinity" if the GP is "open".

Your British engine uses the same glow plugs as the Mercededes 190s did. There is a good upgrade if wanted.

Your OEM plugs will burn out if they get hit with more then 2 volts. That's why they are all hooked in series through four plugs and a fifth resistance/indicator unit.

There's an upgrade now for direct-fit fast-heat 12 volt plugs if you want them. Not very expensive. It is sold for Merecedes 190 diesel cars but is also an exact fit for the IH BD-144 and BD-154 engines (like you have).

Depends if you feel the need for an upgrade or not. Most BDs I've seen are poor cold starters with in-line CAV injection pumps but pretty good with the CAV rotary pumps. And, you've got the rotary.

You can buy the original style glow plugs through any autoparts store. NAPA and Advance has always gotten the Champion # overnight.

They are open-coil design, so when bad it's usually very easy to see once they're out.

Glow plugs are Champion CH28 (155). Bosch # 0250001001 or 0250001010
