Big ol hats off to TimS, who said pull the diff-lock line off and test it, and that cured the problem. everything on the ol tractor feels good. Put that in the win column!
SO, i was over at the neighbors shop last night with the locals, and the question came up....
lets say i took it into john deere with my statement that i think the spider gears are going out. They say okay, we will get right on that. Would they have done like TimS suggested and taken the diff lock line off and tested it or just tore into the tractor, get to the spiders and go, huh, they look fine, but oh well, put new in, put it all back together, and have the same issue...where does liability fall at that point? Say it took them 15 hours because of the cab. Do they go, well, its doing the same thing, new gears, now what....
How ugly of a situation could that become? I really dont know any of the mechanics at the close 3 JD shops, but it seems like the answer for a test was someone with much more experience and spent time on the older machines....just thought this could be an interesting conversation.....
