440C - Engine Locked Up

Just acquired a 64 440C, with the head and starter removed, the engine is still "frozen". The problem seems to be with the forward/reverse lever. Transmission works through all gears. Clutch works as well.
What in the transmission would cause the engine to lock up?
The engine does not seem to be the "source" of the lock-up.

Is it a dual-range with shuttle? If so, there are 3 pages in my IT manual that can be scanned and emailed to you, if you need them. There are gears in the shuttle-shift , and where there are gears, there's always the possibility of siezure.

Any recommendations as to determining the "type" of transmission? triple range/dual range/shuttle? I have the IT manual (C202)and cannot identify the trans type.

Look on the right side of the front transmission cover for a lever(near the brake pedals). The Dual will have a L and D cast into the cover, a triple-range will have a L, D and H. If it's just a straight 4 speed, there'll be no lever near the brake pedals. Are you sure it's a shuttle-shift? Is there a tall lever on the left that has comes up close to the steering wheel, or does it stick out of the side ofe the transmission, and lower than the wheel? Some tractors had a hand-clutch, that if you're not sure, looks like a shuttle-shift.

Great Tip!!!! My tractor has no letters on the trans case (near the brake pedals). The lever (on the left) you speak of does extend from directly below the battery to near the steeting wheel. This may be the hand clutch you refer to. I was told this was the "forward/reverse" lever.
Would this configuration be a straight "4-speed"?
Any recommendations on what is locking up the engine? The tractor will roll very easily with both levers in neutral.

Does your main transmission shifter have a reverse? If it does, then you do not have a shuttle-shift. The lever on the side will be a hand-clutch. The engine could be siezed on the crank main journals, or the connecting rods. Will the tractor roll in gear with the clutch out?

Mike, the dual or triple range tractor with have 3 levers, hand cluctch lever on the left, range lever on the right and gear shift lever in the middle. 440C would indicate you have a 430 series gas tractor with a Case-o-matic transmission. On a COM shuttle shift a lever on the left should come out of a transmission case cover mounted on the torque tube in front of the steering pedestal. If you have a shuttle shift with dual range there should be another short lever on the right exactly opposite of the longer on the left. If no lever on the right you have a straight 4 speed Case-o-matic with shuttle shift.

Does the "clutch" pedal hang down from the top of the torque tube? If so this is definitely a COM. If it comes up from under the floor boards it is a dry clutch model and someone has given you an incorrect model number I believe.

Does the serial plate say 440C on it??? If so, the C designates that it is a Case-O-Matic
The 440 means that it is a 430 series, utility, diesel
