4430 batteris

I have a JD 4430 with 2 6 volt batteries. I have trouble starting it in cold weather. I have a 2940 JD with 2 12 volt batteries and it starts regardless of the weather. How can I hook up 2 12 volt batteries on the 4430. Thanks

You can and I have changed them, mainly for convenience, you can buy 2 12 volt batteries cheaper than 2 6 volt batteries. just ground both neg posts and run 2 positive cables to starter. But lead and acid makes amps. So I think your total weight of batteries is what makes cranking power. You probably have a bad connection or a weak batt. Our 40 series have 12 volt batteries.

But when you run 2 12 volt batteries parellel you double the amps so 2 900 amp battries =1800 amp. When you have 2 6volt you can double the volts to 12 but amps never get any higher then your best battery But you will have a lot longer reserve so 2 6s should crank longer . But the 2 12s should crank faster. If your batteries are bad and you are sure your starter is in good shape then I would go with 2 12 volt batteries. If your starter is questionable you can put an 8000 series starter on there they spin faster for easier starts.

in addition to whatever batteries you decide on check your hydraulic pump for a destroking screw. If it has one use it. If not get one and use it, Bob

I USE TWO 12 VOLT BATTERIES IN ALL MY DIESEL TRACTORS. I BUY THE BATTERIES WITH THE 3/8 STUDS TERMINALS INSTEAD OF THE POST AND SAVES A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH CORROSION. DAVID B

My 4230 cranked slow and it turned out that replacing the old Delco starter with a new Nippondenso was the solution. If your starter is good two six volt batteries with good cables will spin it just fine.

I agree. If you plan to keep the tractor awhile and use ti in cold weather often, buy 2 new 12 volt batteries and hook them as mentioned above (in parallel) and also get the nippendenso starter, they are much better.

Thanks all you techs. When I plug the block heater in for an hour or longer, the starter turns the engine over fast and it starts right away. When these batteries get weaker, I will replace them with two 12 volts. Roy
