4430 steering problems

We have an early model 4430(1974 year model) with cab. Last fall we were having some problems with the steering. At start-up, the steering would be sluggish and the steering wheel would stop and the wheels would need several seconds to catch up. After the wheels slowly went to full turn(bump stop) steering would return to normal for a while. After it run and got hot, steering would be sluggish and the tractor would want to wander. This was dangerous on the road. We hauled it to the dealer to have this as well as some other small things fixed. Dealer rebuilt the "steering pump" under the dash to the tune of $1000. Got it home and it was still doing the sam thing sometimes as well as a loud whine/squeal any time the steering wheel was moved. Called the dealer and they sent out a tech. Tech couldn't fix it so they hauled it back to the shop. Disassembled and reassembled the pump a couple of times and said they had it fixed. Got it home and it still has the whine/squeal but the stopping part is much better but not absolutely fixed. They said they would come back and get it again after we finish with hay, but I'm looking for some input as to what the real problem is. The whine in the steering is enough to drive you crazy in the cab. I'm not sure that they have any idea what the problem is. Any input from the seasoned techs here? Thanks in advance!

There Is a "strong" chance they were working on the wrong end of the steering system, sounds like the steer motor needs re-sealed,,and in the mix of things they probably have the steer valve adjusted a bit 'tight',,If it were here I would re-calibrate the valve(under the dash) and re-seal the motor (which is down under the side frame),,,If the dealer did not have any "old guys" there chances are the younger ones were "honestly" cluelss about the system and how to set it up corectly, they more than likely tightened up the clearance in the steer valve trying to correct the problem the steer motor was tossing at them..thus giveing you that squeal...

Thanks for the help. The tech that came out was a younger fellow. I'll ask them to check those things when they come get it...again. How much to re-seal the motor on the side, in general?

those old guys with experience are getting hard to find i would pay dubble to have someone who knew how to work on it than some one who is just geusing
