4430 Transmission Issues

Here is the full story, yesterday I just got a john deere 4430 quad range running that was sitting on our property and it drove fine i ran it up and down the road through all of the gears,(note- the pto is spining all the time even with lever off) once i drove it a little i hooked it up to the bale fork and the 3point was miserably slow down and up, i went to go move some bales and by the 4th bale the 3 point barely moved, i started heading back to the farm and i could barly go forward as i was trying to figure out what was going on i decided to turn on the pto lever and when i down shifted from 2 to 1 the lever kicked out.....with that i shut it down..........i let it cool down for 2 hrs or so and i went to try to move it again and it moved fine but the 3point was still slow, the pto was still moving with the lever off and when the pto lever was on, it still kicked out when you downshifted..

Can someone help me understand what the problem is, something to do with pressure because it only happens when oil is warm and thin

Screen had a little bit of stuff in it but cleared it and it is still doing the same things
Just so we are all on the same page the “suction screen” is in the bottom of the rear differential case. It is number 30 in this link. JD 4430 parts catalog It is held in by a round nut that unscrews with a 1/2” square drive. To pull it and check it you have to drain all the hydraulic oil or keep a vacuum on the hydraulic filler tube. You did this?
You need to install new filters. This is the only way to be certain that they are not the problem. Do you want to do an extensive transmission tear down only to find out the filters were plugged? It’s all part of, if you want to play (use the tractor) you have to pay.
Okay, fill in the missing parts of the “Full Story” “setting on property” how long and why? You talk about the PTO spinning when the lever is off. Many of these vintage Deeres have failed/wore out PTO brakes so the PTO spins even when they are disengaged. Do you know anything about how the tractor worked prior to this? And are you saying the PTO lever disengages when you make the transmission downshift? This may be a problem with a worn lever in the PTO control linkage. It may be aggravated by loose cab mounts, see link to older YT post.
JD 4430 synchro/quad PTO disengage
Not saying you don’t have other more serious problems.

One way or another you're gonna have to hook up some gauge and find out what the trans system pressure and lube pressure are doing. I'm guessing you got an internal leak somewhere and loosing pressure. The PTO probably kicked out because of lack of system pressure. Sufficient system pressure is required to help "lock" the PTO valve in the engaged position.

PTO spins as in freewheeling due to turning in the transmission oil ? However the PTO won’t turn a load until the PTO control lever is engaged ?
iirc the high low clutch pack is spring apply high and hydraulic apply for low ?
Seals and gaskets are 48+ years old and have how many hours of service . There are products that swell and soften seals …………..
If the transmission is torn down . Deere sells an upgrade oil pump .
These bales are being picked up via a fork on the three point hitch instead of using a FEL ?

Both HiLo clutches are hydraulically engaged and spring released.

I agree 100% you need to check the sump screen and change the hydraulic filter immediately. This is low hanging fruit stuff that may never had been done. My 4020 PS screen was choked with brake flakes, caused similar problems.
