444 Belt Pulley problem

I recently put a belt pulley on my 444G. The problem is I cannot disengage the pulley. It runs whenever you let the clutch out. The PTO lever engages and disengages the PTO shaft correctly, but does not affect the belt pulley. Any Suggestions?

That"s how they work, Totally different set up than a 44. Remove unit when not needed.

Okay thanks. That's what I was wondering. The operators manual for the 444 says the belt pulley is disengaged with the PTO lever. But now I know that is incorrect, thanks for the information.

it should stop when the pto is stopped there is no way it runs all the time its just like the 44 and our 444 dose stop when the pto is turned off

Okay. Well, it runs whenever the clutch is released. Even though the PTO is disengaged and not turning. I would like to be able to leave the pulley on this tractor as we do have belt work from time to time.

I don't know a whole lot about the triple series.. Used to be a neighbor had a 444.. He has passed away now.. but he used to have the pulley hangin in the shed, and the "drive" stayed on the tractor, he'd cover it with the "cap" when he took the pulley off.. always said it turned all the time.. He always seemed shocked that the one on my 33 didn't..

Don't know if it's true or not, as I never did see the tractor run.. I could ask his son, but being we're both right at 30, and I can't remember the tractor running nearly my whole life, I bet he don't remember anything either (but he still has the tractor)

Right, on the 33,44's the PTO lever is up where a belt pulley disconnect would be easier to incorporate into the same shaft.

I suppose by the time the triples were being made the belt pulley operation was not a high priority.

Runs all the time as noted by Mike.
A general description is the top shaft in a 44 is used for pto/belt only and is engaged by gear from trans main shaft. On a 444 this shaft is used as part of the hi/lo of the trans.It is driven by constant mesh gears at the front outside of the main trans case as evidenced by a larger gear cover instead of a bearing cap as on a 44. The 444 pto in/out gear is at the rear of the back housing close to the pto lever location.

Thanks for all the replies. I looked at a breakout drawing of the tranny and see that is how it must operate.
Just thought maybe I was missing something when the manual talked about disengaging the belt pulley. Obviously a holdover section of the manual from the 44's.
