4440 Fuel Injectors Question

Got to have a set rebuilt just wondering if 4640 injectors would have a horsepower gain or if they will even work? Looking for a few extra horses. Thanks

Nozzles don't effect fuel flow,only spray pattern. Only the injection pump will do that. Just turn the pump up if that is all you want.Part numbers are different, so I would stick with what you have.

HP is determined by the "rack setting" in the IP.

Injectors just have to be "large" enough to handle the fuel supplied by the IP.

If too "big" for a given max fuel rate, spray pattern will be poor.

Definitely stick with the 4440 injectors. If you put 4640 injectors in it you will just get alot of white smoke and poor starting and poor running-just the opposite of what you want.

There are "many" diferent nozzel tips that were used on 44's and 46's,size of holes and number of holes were tested and tried to come up with economy and preformance,,a half a turn on the torque screw will give you 50 HP or-so,,It's like a lot of things there needs to be 'harmony' in the mix..

When these tractors were fairly new, I had a customer that was convinced there was "free" horsepower to be had by changing injector size.

We spent over a day tinkering with fuel timing a couple of degrees along with the bigger tips. Eventually, we had a combination where he was sure he had the extra 10-15 horse he was looking for. But I'm pretty sure any increase was within the normal variations of dyno accuracy, fuel temperature, air temperature, etc.
And by the way, the crankshaft broke about 3000 hours later. Coincidence? Hmmm....

You probably won't really hurt anything by putting in bigger tips. Probably won't help much, either. If it were mine, I'd keep it original.

The 4040,4240 and 4440 were medium frame tractors.
So you want to put the power of a large frame 4640/4840 tractors with the heavier drive train. Through the lighter drive train?

You aren't gonna hurt the tractor, big frame, small frame, whatever. You aren't gonna tear up a tranny or break a crank with what you are talking. The motors are almost identical exept for an intercooler. If you were to change tip sizes drastically, you would screw up your spray pattern, but not with what you are talking. Throw them in, you will be fine. Crack the screw a little also if you feel like it. A 4440 runs fine for a long time with an extra 30-40 hp. If you get a chance, throw on a 4850 turbo, it bolts right in and cleans up the exhaust just a bit and you will notice a litte gain as well. To you guys that think turning your tractor up 10 hp is gonna wreck it, I have a 4440 with 250 hp and 13,000 hrs, and never had a tranny issue. Went thru the motor at 10,800 hours due to a valve seat dropping. I do not have it wieghted heavily, that will tear things up faster than anything

Nozzles can and will: effect fuel flow, effect spray pattern or angle, opening pressure (NOP).

You can have the same injector body, with both the same NOP and spray angle and still have different fuel flows. How? By changing the orfice size on the nozzle. I could give you 4 nozzle assemblies that all fit the same holder and have flows of 800, 1200, 1400, 1600 cc/min.

The 4440 was dyno"d and tested by Deere to use "X" injector with "X" engine because they found it to give the best HP vs fuel consumtion; with the best life span for that engine, pump, injectors, turbo, etc combination. Or in present day, also best emmissions. Unless the 4640"s injectors are the same part number, by rights it isn"t necessarily the best injector for the engine.

Sure it might work, but does it go through more fuel vs the HP & Tq gain? Does the engine run hotter (not on the temp gauge, but rather in the exhaust and in the combustion chamber)? Also, long term problems might be partial melted pistons or over heated nozzle tip. Engine life could also be comprimized.

Want more HP, buy a bigger tractor......
