my 445 hyd. steering box started leaking really bad. its leaking out where the input shaft is. my book shows a snap ring, which i can see on the outside, and an oring, which must be on the inside. can someone please tell me the procedure for repair? thanks, cliff.

It is most likely that your leak is actually occuring at the piston seals in the cylinder/rack section of the power steering. When the piston seals leak, the oil typically leaks out around the steering (input) shaft once the front bulster is filled with hydraulic fluid. The piston seals are not too difficult to replace if you have a repair manual and follow the instructions.

Good Luck!

If it is heavier oil that is leaking out it might be the oil in the front housing. Wear on the shaft and the o ring can cause a leak. There are 2 snap rings, one on the inside and one on the outside of the shaft. You will have to remove the external valve and separate the rear housing from the front to replace the o ring but if the shaft and housing is wore, you will more than likely have another leak in a short time. There are also other o rings between the valve and housing also that can leak.

thanks for the information...you were right, i did the repair, and it solved the problem. again, thanks for the help. cliff.
