450 Case Dozer

I have a 1977 450 Case dozer... has sat about 8 years. My grandfather had it and he put a remanufactured motor in about 10 years ago. It broke a rod bolt and rod busted thru BOTH sides of block. My question is this worth fixing or am I gonna have a bunch of problems from sitting? Also.. it has new tracks and more undercarriage work same time as motor. I would replace complete motor or just block, rods, and crank if I could find a good block? Just hate to spend $3000 or more and then have more problems due to setting?

the dozers are worth more than the loaders if that is any help....where are you located

have you tried to move it??? new tracks tend to freeze up easier than worn...hydraulics may leak after sitting that long but then again once seals get some oil on them it may quit leaking...same thing with injector pump...i'd drain fuel system,check for rust,and start with fresh diesel.

crawlers need work no matter how good theyre taken care of...since you know its history,it would be a good machine to put money into IF you want to keep it...fixing it to sell is another ball of wax.

What is fresh diesel going to do when you have a a hole in each side of the block? That's a relatively small dozer so maybe a used engine can be found reasonable? If everything else was in good shape, I think it might be worth fixing since the undercarriage is new. Dave

Ya... I was kinda thinkin it would be worth it as I intend to keep for personal use, but thought i would kinda throw the question out there to see what everyone that knows about them thinks. As far as moving... it was a bear to load and bring home as the tracks are froze up.. 1 did start to free up some. I guess i will try and find either a decent running 188 or 207 (mine is 207 but figured 188 would be enough power if price is right) or a good block and rebuild bottom end (could use head and other parts from my motor as they are low hours). I am located in Ohio... If anyone knows of anything around that is priced right... please let me know. (Just hate to pour a bundle into it and find out something else is broke).

Maybe you could put a perkins or other type of engine in it, I have a 1974 Case 450A tracked loader and it has a DB 990 engine of about 60 hp

Yeah, I had thought about a different type of motor. I can get a 4BT Cummins from a buddy, but not real sure if I want all the hassle. I would just prefer a straight bolt in as I have enough "projects" to keep me busy without having to fab up a bunch of couplers and mounts. But it is tempting, especially the xtra H.P. but then I would have to worry about breaking stuff.
