'46 John Deere B governor issue

I am having a problem getting the John Deere B engine to come up to high engine rpm. The most I can get out of it is 1070 rpm. Governor linkage and throttle linkage has been adjusted to specks. Engine runs fine on a dyno except for the rpms not coming up to 1340. Governor seems to control engine speed smooth and reacts to load variations. The throttle spring is bent radically with throttle lever all the way open. If you manually move the governor arm the rpms will come up. When you turn it loose it will go back to a high rpm of 1070. Am i in for a governor overhaul?

I just ordered a spring for mine and Walt's sent me the wrong one, too long. Know your length when you order it. Walt', even with shipping, is only half of Deere's.

There's an adjustable bolt on the steering column that limits how far you can push the throttle lever forward. Have you tried adjusting it to allow the throttle to move forward more and pull harder on the flat spring? If/when you adjust it go easy, they break off very easily.

If that doesn't increase rpm's then you need a new flat spring. B273R

It's time to adjust your governor out of spec and see if that helps any. It did on mine but not enough. My best adjustment was for a straight drop in on the half hole short business. At a half hole short I got no low idle response to a dieing engine so it went ahead just died on me. At drop in I got some throttle at idle speeds but not enough to suit me or the 800 in parts I just put in there. Best of luck.

If it's suddenly much worse then you need to go for a whole hole short.

Thanks to all. The flat spring made the difference. Engine immediately took off. Can't believe how weak that spring was.
