460 Puller

Just bought a Farmall 460 puller. What can I do to get more power if needed? It already has the C301 engine. Also how do I get the power I have to the track. I'm a beginner and need a little help. Always puller JD G or Oliver in the past.

It should have enough power with the 301.I would focus on weight balance and a Good set of rear tires.

Are you planning on pulling Div.2 or 3 in your area. The difference being uncut or cut tires. I doubt a stock 301 would have enough for a cut class. One suggestion is stripping it down to get your weight down as low as you can.

If you're allowed, TURN UP THE RPMs These small engines make terrific HP/cubic inch. Especially when you turn them up. Some porting, and valve work helps and of course if you're turning the RPMs balancing would be prefered.

A good running stock 301 will have plenty of power in a 3.5 mph cut class, and 4mph if you don"t go real heavy.

I will be pulling Div. 2 uncut and cut at some pulls. I will check the RPM we are allowed 10% over stock. As for balancing I suppose you mean the crank, flywheel etc. I plan on have the head ported and bigger valves pu in. Also to open up the manifold. I plan on porting the head and adding bigger valves. We are allowed 10% over on RPM, as for balancing, I suppose you mean the crank,flywheel etc? I pull only Div. 2 uncut and cut tires, 3 to 3.5 MPH Also plan to open up the manifold. Any other ideas let me know. Have a safe pulling summmer.

Another GOOD STOCK puller.No wonder a lot of the guys just wanting to fun pull their stock tractors are quiting.

3.5 and 4 mph cut tire classes are considered modified stock. 301 is a direct factory replacement. Stick to the parades if you don"t like the rules.

Get the weight balanced by finding out how much it weighs empty.Then add a percentage to the front or rear by reading the track.
I am putting together the same tractor,it's almost done.
I have heard the quickest way to ruin a head is to have it ported and polished with bigger valves.
Try pulling it first,a good 301 has enough power to pull 3mph.
Where do you plan on pulling?Are you near southeastern Indiana

Div.2 isn't Tho.so stay in your cut tire classes then.I wasn't talking Div.3 or 4.

porting the head and manifold will not ruin the power. port shape is very important and just making it bigger is axactly the wrong thing to do.each application is differant and needs to be treated as such.the trick is finding the restrictions by using a velocity probe on a flow bench and tayloring the velocity profile to suit the engine.stock ,stroked,low rpm or high i have always found power by porting.but again each application needs to be treated differantly.

Are you SURE that you want to put bigger valves in? If you put too big a valve in that head, you will shroud it againt the combustion chamber wall and it will flow less than it does now in stock form. Keep that in mind.

Stock??? what the heck does stock mean???

In pulling, and I dont care what class you run, there is no such thing as a stock pulling tractor. even in DIV 1. if you have ever overhauled your engine, its not stock, if you have had to overbore the engine cause the cyls were shot and put in replacement parts, even if its listed for that make and model in the parts book, its not stock. if we had to go by stock, there would be nobody legal, cause most FARM tractors have had some sort of overhaul, what have ya.
In pulling, stock to me means tire size, hitch specs and rpm,, typically found in the rule book for that class,,, stock to me means having a bone stock hitch, and a bone stock tire size, and bone stock rpm. the stock in apprearence rule is what allows the internal modifications, like overbores, and ported heads legal. What you cant see is ok!! Just as long as it looks stock on the outside, and the hitch, tire size and rpm is all that makes the differences in whats considered a stock, and a modified class.
Nobody is bone stock anymore, not even your everyday average hard working farm tractor that is over 30 years old. at one point and time, somebody has had em apart, fixed em, enhanced them, whatever, you know it, I know it, we all know it. Thats why the rules on hitches, tires and rpms are in play. They say dont bring a knife to a gun fight. we all know that, and if that upsets anybody, there are always plow contests, parades, and shows that you or anybody can participate in,,, even if you have repainted the tractor,,, its no longer stock,,,, so how much more do you wanna complain?? Most fun in the world to a puller is to beat the competition,,, and nobody that pulls on a higher level is gonna take a bone stock machine to a pull and win where there are enhanced tractors,, the shiny paint lets em cut thru the wind easier than an old rusty machine,,, HAHA!! wanna kno what stock pulling is in our club??? Strokers, and any ci, and any block allowed, how would you like to pull against that and be competitve??? scary huh??? Not really,,, every dog has its day. JMHO

I wasn't going to comment any more on this matter High Octane,because I could care less what you or others do.My original comment was to help promote the New people that bring their old stock H or M or what ever to play(have a good time)and run out of power 100 Ft.down the track and Joe Hot Rod with his Bored-Stroked H or M IDLES down the track 250 FT..THEY WILL not be back and the pull or club dies from lack of Pullers.AS far as me and my tractors,they are BONE STOCK(Correct CID,(NO M&Ws,NO LP pistons)Drawbar,RPM and Correct size tires.I have 6 that I can or do pull,I have pulled 54 years and have seen TOO MANY CLUBS go from 125-200 Hooks a pull to 20-30 and then break up for lack of pullers. I have won more then my fair share of pullers and don't complain when I don't,but this is a sport that needs new blood to keep it going and If the people with their Div.4 and 5 tractors keep coming down into the Div.2 Classes,then the person that just wants to play without taking out a mortgage on his house to build a pulling tractor(Seen it done too many times)won't come pull.You can blast me all you want to because I have had a good time,but you are only killing it for the new people that want to have a good family time and not hock them selfs to do it.

Massey333, naaa wasnt bashin ya at all, thats the good ol boy explanation I got when I complained about it too!! I feel your pain, even though there maybe some outthere with the bone stockers,, and in their own class they can do just fine, they need to split em all up by a good tech crew, and go from there, no good guy free passes, no looking the other way, but good ol fashioned sorting thru the mods and the stocks, and put them where they belong.

Which Division rules are you referring to? NATPA Div. IV list 1957 and older. Curious to know if there has been a change or if it is in reference to another group.
