4620 ....what's the lowdown?

I was looking at a 4620 today....I was thinking it might make a good loader tractor. This one had 18.4/38 rear tires and 11.00/16 fronts with syncro transmission. I suppose they were mostly syncro, I haven't seen a powershift yet.

My question....How reliable were these tractors? I noticed that they had the same rear as a 4630 and 7520? Parts availability? I know some of the mechanics on board must have worked on a few of these. Any suggestions? And do they really pull as good as a 4440?

They were available in both PS and Synchro transmissions.

As far as for a loader tractor.... The frontend is heavy enough but the dry type traction drive clutch in a synchro might be a bit of an issue after prolonged use.

I used to have a 4440..powershift...I always thought it must be one of jd's best tractors. I noticed the 4440 and 4620 are rated horsepower wise as essentially the same. 4620 is 404...4440 is 466. Is the 4620 able to add any more power with a bigger turbo and turned up pump? Just curious....And are all the parts still available for the Powershifts?

We had 2 of 'em, which (along with a black stripe 1066) were our 'big' tractors for a lot of years. All three were factory rated at 135 pto hp. Some regulars who post have reported turning them up to 180-200 hp with no problems, but ours were strictly stock. They had a great front-end under 'em, but were a bit of a dog in the field. Fwiw, I wouldn't want one for a loader tractor and would look for something more 'nimble'.

I had a 4620 (2) 4440s & a 4640 The 4620 would outpull th 4440s all day long But it did have bigger tires with fluid. I also had a dozer on the 4620 to push silage . The dry clutch on the loader is not a problem if ya don"t ride the clutch I had 9800 hours on mine and only had 2 clutchs. The 4620 did burn more fuel but did more work. That 404 engine is a good engine but they weren"t made to pull the heck out of Mine run 2800 Rpm all the time when not under load when being worked I never pulled it below 2300. weight wise the 4620 was closer to the 4640 but the 4640 would way out work the 4620. The 4440 would be a handier loader tractor But the price would be double.

I've never understood the problems that folks report with the dry clutches. There's a '65 4020D out back that was bought new and has had a 46A fel on it for most of its life....used for feeding silage from a pit silo and moving/feeding round bales of hay. There's another one......bought new in '67......with a Waldon front-mounted blade. The tachs have long been broken, but they each have better than 15,000 hours and the clutches have not been an issue......any more than a tractor used strictly in the field.

Well I don't own the 4620 anymore. But Dad and I each own a 4000 his is a 1970 bought new in madison mine is a 1969 bought in 1985 at a farm sale by trent for $3250 had 5400 hours on it now has 8600 hours. The 4000s have a double needle tach one end shows mph the other shows Rpm The needle will lay flat crossways on both at full throttle The last numbers on them is 2800 The 4620 last numbers was 2500 but the markings for 3000 is there.

We have a 4520 with the 4620 engine(the 4520's had some engine problems many related to the air cleaner) not sure if I would want a loader on it or not. It is our big tractor and was quite a step up from a 4020. The pto in these is only 1000rpm which is why 4320's usually outsell 45 and 4620's. The front end is much better than 4320's and you should never have to worry about breaking it with a loader. We like ours and it cost us less than a late model 4020 would have.

Ive got a 72 4620 & need the 2 drums in the front clutchpack (powershift) & Deere has none available & neither does the obsolete parts place in wisconsin. I just cant beleive Deere doesnt have these drums especially since they were used in the 4520 & 4630s also

The 4620 is a good source of cheap horsepower. There were 6928 made with 1883 being powershifts. The ones I have seen sell bring about $4000 less than an equal 4020.They have a front axle that can take loader abuse .The two things I dont like is the big hood and only 1000 pto.The Roll-Guard cab is noisy and also part of the platform.Fenders are a little harder to find. There have been a few power-shifts that have sold over 20k.
