466 connecting rod

I have run into something i have never see before.
I am doing an inframe rebuild on a JD 4450 and i started putting it back together this afternoon. the rods are cast "front" on one side and R71074 on the other. just like any other JD rod. so i put one and six piston sleeve and rod with the arrow on the piston and the cast "front" on the rod facing the radaitor, tourque turn the bolts and turn it over and the rod bolt hits the block on the cam side. so I checked it out and the rod is in backwards. how could this be ?
The big end of the rod has to be towards the cam but then the rod casting "front" is facing the flywheel.
Has anyone seen this before ? am I missing something.
I had someone helping me when I removed the pistons and i was on the bottom. so I didn't see them come out. I looked at the rods on the bench and saw "front" and didn't clean of the top of the piston to see the arrow. i pulled all the pistons and sent out the rods for bushings.
This tractor needs to be chopping corn sunday,
I just drove an hour and got some new rod bolts. and I need to get some sleep. so I would sleep alot better tonight is someone said they have seen a JD rod cast backwards before.

mEL Thanks, your right they can only work one way. but I just can't belive it. It is like commiting a sin.

knock the wrist pins out & turn the piston around the right way...somebody put the pistons on the wrong way..simple ...Kent

Not likely it's made wrong, I've done a ba-zilion of these engines, never saw one cast wrong, re-think every thing in the morning, I'm sure you will sort it out....

sorry misread your post ..been in a few 466 & 429 power units & rod won't go in but one way & pistons need to be to be pointed forward to lube properly..go to bed ...Kent

According to a 1983 service bulletin {OEM 83-20-1}, around 33 engines were built with the rods marked incorrectly.

They were installed in 6466T and 6466A engines between engine serial #s 238220 and 240166. The rods will be marked R71074.

They are OK to use, just put 'em in so they fit.

rexhellwig is right, I ran accross one of those engines in the late 80's. Only one I had ever seen. Had me scratching my head too untill getting with deere on that one. I don't remember any more what it was in.

I never knew about this,,It's a wonder that one of them hasn't came through the shop by now. I am always 'double' checking piston and rods to be sure they are matched up correctly..I can see where something like this would make you scratch your head and wonder...
