478 herculies

I am wondering what the differences are in the military version and the agriculture version of the 478 herculies. Looking to put the military engine into a 2050 thanks

Well how much detail do you want to get into. Is the Militay engine still have the constant speed covernor? I did a program for a certain states Nation Guard one time and Hercules sent me at least 20 pages of stuff that could be or was different on Military engines compared to the civilian engines. With that being said the military engines are better ballanced and run smoother. Another example, early 20 & 2150 tractors used Military standard oil filters. Later ones used spin on filters.Don't get me wrong I know of a number of tractors that the 2 engines were used to make one engine.

Some people have told me that it will not bolt into the tractor and that the crank is totally different, which would come back to be balanced better. I am wondering if the flywheel will bolt on? And also what other changes will need intto be made to get it in the tractor?

The crankshaft has extra holes. I have a former dealer friend who has used the military engine in the tractor, BUT they had to take parts off the tractor engine to make it all work.

the flywheel isn't really a big problem, if you are going to be pulling much; you should be getting a steel flywheel have it made to fit the crank pattern you intend to use.

Put one in a 2-155 this summer. It works but you have to strip the military engine down to a long block and the same with the tractor and swap those parts. 2 holes had to be drilled to fit the tractor water pump. Runs good and starts right up in the cold with the high compression pistions 22:1 vs 18:1 in the tractor. If i had to do it again I would just overhaul the original engine with military sleeve and piston sets. About $110 per cylender for those.

I am not sure how similar they are, however if you are looking for engine parts, i have a COMPLETE 478 Hercules engine from a 2-135 White series 3 for sale. It is still in the tractor as of today, but will be available anytime. If you would like more info please call me at 563 382 4530. I am usually there from 8 am thru 5 pm CST.
