48 A front wheel wobble

My tractor has rolo matic and when you get it up to speed in road gear the front end has a wobble to it. I repacked the hubs and ajusted the bearing. When the tractor is parked theres only about a 1/8 of a turn on the steering wheel.Thers not alot of movement.I have old 16 inch flat thread tires on it.I just bought new tires but havent instaled them yet.Could my problem be in the tires? Also the tractor wants to pull to the left a little.I have a manual and it talks about ajusting the shims in the bearing plate on the pedastal and tighten up the packing nut. I didnt know where to start looking. The tires could have a bad spot on it and causing my wobble.I have had some go bad on my truck and it shook like my tractor.

These old Letter series tractors with front wheel wobble/shimmy usually have more than one issue so it makes sense to start with the easiest, like replacing tires if they are not good. Another easy fix that sometimes works is to remove shims from the the front bearing cap so as to tighen up as much as possible without hindering ease of steering. Another thing you can do is to tighten up the ecentric bushing in the steering box. After that it's more work by replacing worn parts. Good Luck! John

After adjusting the eccentric bushing in the topof the pedestal, you might try running one tire with lower tire pressure.

Ok I done some checking today. I jacked up the front of the tractor and spun the wheels and one tire is out of round bad . I got some new tires because the old ones are dry cracked bad . I will get them changed out and that should fix it . There's no slack in the steering wheel by pulling it back and forth. There's only a 1/8 of a turn play side to side and the roll o matic spindles seem tight.

OK, here we go.

First, check the tires. They're probably not the cause, but check them anyway.

Second, check the shims under the front cover that adjusts the steering rod back and forth.

If that doesn't do it, and it usually doesn't, the eccentric gear that is driven by the worm gear on the steering shaft has probably got some slop in it between the two. If this is the case, tweaking it probably won't completely take care of it.

At the bottom of the steering pedestal, there is a bearing, a metal washer, a cork washer, a gasket, and a cap that holds it all in place. If that bearing is worn out, (good chance), it will still wobble even if you tighten the eccentric gear towards the steering shaft worm gear.

The only way to eliminate the mess is usually a complete rebuild. If you don't want to mess with it (you have to remove the front pedestal from the frame), tighten up what you can and hope for the best.

Otherwise, just slow her down or drive in 5th.

Good luck!
