5.9 Cummins problem

I am putting a 5.9 into my White tractor. Got an engine from a bus with the P 7100 pump. The first time I ran it I could run it at idle but as soon as it went over about 1200 RPM it would run the pitts and smoke like it was -40. I left it sit for a few days and the next time I tried it it worked fine, no smoke and reved out nice. Today I fired it up again and it did the same thing as the first time. What is going on? Has anyone come across this situation before, if so, what did it take to fix the problem? Thanks for the help.

Check the lift pump, it should have good feel the length of the primer stroke with a line or bleeder cracked open, also check for good flow from tank. Change fuel filter.

What color smoke? Blue or Black?
Also remember, that pump has an enriching start position. If you move the throttle about 30% open on start up...it throws more fuel in for a faster easier start.
If you are getting black smoke...you are over fueling for some reason.

Make sure that your not getting any air in the system. These 5.9s can do funny things with just a little air in them. Like the other poster check fuel transfer pump and filters.

cummins are very very very very very sensitive to fuel flow to the i-pump.... the slightest restriction in the filter or a bad or weak lift pump will do that. A leak anywhere so that the fuel will drain back will do it as well.. The i-pump must have a good feed at all times as I said earlier, its very very very very very very sensitive to feed pressure..

Not only that, but the P7100 Bosch Pumps for the Cummins were notorious for having a "sticky rack" condition. This can be a result of sitting for a while, condensation etc... Try to run some Stanadyne additive through and see if it cleans it up.

Thanks guys, I think I found the problem, if I restrict the return line with a pliers the engine runs fine. The valve inside the banjo bolt on the return line from the inj pump was not seating.
Thanks for the help
