5 Kw military Generator

Hello,

I recently bought a 5 Kw military generator. It was made in 12/59. And it also has a continental engine in it. I was wondering where I could find a carb for it. I"m not sure on what model engine it is except that it is a small 4 cyl. producing 16 HP at 4000 rpm. Very similar to the engine in a Allis Chalmers G. Does anyone know where I could find parts for this generator, such as spark plugs, engine parts, gauges for generator control box, ect.

It may be the N62 engine and your local auto parts store should have ignition parts. They may have some replacement gauges too. You can try this number to see if they have a carburetor. That engine speed is probably governored at 1800 rpm's in order to get 60HZ. It could be 3600, but I doubt it. The engine will last a lot longer between engine rebuilds running at 1800.
We used one similar to that generator on this vehicle for powering our instrumentation and air conditioner until it was converted to diesel. We used this vehicle for drawbar pull and cooling tests for the Army. Hal

Thats a pretty nice generator you have there. If I remember correctly, 5kw is the high altitude rating. At sea level they are more like 7.5kw.

Sounds like the one Dad has. Engine runs at 3600 really screams. Do you have a carb. at all ? I think ours has a Zenith on it. Ours will also make 3 phase.

That's all on the tag on the side of the Generator. I do not have a carb at all. I'm not sure if I even have all the linkages. Where is a good place to find manuals for it? So I know what I'm doing, and what is supposed to be there and what isn't.

Continental made many water-cooled and air-cooled generator engines for the military. Most military surplus places have new carbs and other parts. I just bought a new muffler and carb from Colemans for my two-cylinder Continental air-cooled - the place the other poster mentioned.

It appears that the engine is a Y-69. Continental made several "families" of engines. The N family like in the Allis G and the Y family and the F family. Y includes the y-69 and y-112(?). These were used in many applications including small forklifts. I had a 62 R IH combine with the Y-112. Still, while a carb may fit, the carb would have to have the correct linkage for governor setup

Yeah...you have a WK6. Fought those things for years. Good little machines when they run right. They also made a 10KW in the same hardware. just bigger engine and generator.
Getting parts for that thing might be fun. I had one with a bad ringgear for years. Finally gave up on it and made a PTO generator off the back of the tractor out of it.
I am not sure who put the things together. It may be Hollingsworth in Pa., or Hobart. They both put them together.
