#5 or #7 sickle bar ?

are the #5 and #7 sickle bars the same thing with different length bars or are they pretty much the same??? And can anyone tell me the length of the pitman stick between the centers of the ends?? Would the pitman from one work ok on the other?

What brand of mowers are you talking about? The No. 5 that I know of is a John Deere while the No. 7 that I know of is a McCormick. Do not know if Deere ever made a No. 7 mower or McCormick a No. 5 mower.

sorry i should have said it was a jd I was told the one i have for parts is a #5. the one recently aquired is said to be a #7. part/casting #s on both start with letter z any help much appreciated thanks.

thanks jim hello bob??? is there anything that you might be able to add to help me out? the #5 is mounted to my jdh partser the #7 used to be run on an ihc h which is what i plan to do i was also told the #9 jd mower was the best can anyone confirm ??

I"m not the Bob you were looking for. However, I am a long time JD user and collector and do have info on the mowers from that period. The Nr 5 was in production from the later "30s until replaced by the Nr 8 for the 1958 season. The 8 looks somewhat similar with a single caster wheel. They also introduced the Nr 9 fully mounted (i.e. 3pt hitch) mower at the same time. Both the 8 and 9 were optionally available as the Nos. 8W and 9W for the wide tread tractor models. Deere also offered a new Model 10 pitmanless side-mounted mower for the last of the Waterloo 2-cylinder tractors

Smaller Dubuque tractors (i.e. the Model M-series) originally were matched to the 51 rear mounted mower. Deere introduced the M-20 center-mount mower for the Dunuques in the early "50s.

However, I have not heard of, nor can I find any reference of, a Nr 7 mower.

thanks bob what you say does help some. it looks like it must be a #5 with a caster wheel. any idea on the pitman length?? i'm gonna have to find the ends for the stick the end for the eccentric wheel and the end for the cutter bar where might i go for these? any info helps thank a bunch.

I'll measure the pitman on mine tomorrow and email you the length. I have bought pitman sticks for the #5, both of my Ford 501s (I have two versions, long pitman and short pitman) and previously for my Oliver mower from a local aftermarket parts guy. In a pinch I make my own out of ash, hickory or oak, whatever I happen to have available.

Both the #5 and the #8 had single caster wheels. Send me an email and I will email you a scanned picture of the #5 from the Operator"s Manual so you can be sure what you have.

More input on #5 & #8 mowers. The #5 has an offset frame so the caster wheel runs in line with the right rear wheel of the tractor, while the #8 has a straight frame so the caster wheel runs in line with the center of the tractor. The #8 has a cutterbar breakaway that allows only the cutterbar to swing back, and an internal overload ratchet. I am not real familiar with the breakaway setup or the overload setup on the #5, but I'm sure that Bob H can fill you in.

If the mower is a #5 or #8, the pitman "wood" and attaching parts for the ends are still available at your friendly DEERE dealer. NOT cheap, though!
