I have purchased a john deere 5010 with a 3160 CAT motor. M and W made the factory conversion kit and only 50 were made. Any one have any info on these or one of their own?

congrats--i dont have any info but i had a 5020 w/318 detroit. you will have hrs of entertainment. what size tires? rops and canopy?

Mike, after we spoke there is one about 30 miles north of me.I will find out his name and #.My knowledge is limited on these.Kind of a rough crowd on here today.I do know that a nice 5020 with an 8V71 will bring 5 times what a stock one will because I looked at one that sold.Good luck.

Not that I overly like the fact of the cat in the deere- BUT in todays age- that tracotr being collector status, and then have a M&W cat V-8 kit in it, yeah thats cool. So the thing to look at here- is you have a 5010 thats 1 of 50- which in all reality- its probably less then that because how many of those kits are sitting on a shelf somewhere? How many of the tractors that got the kit are dead and gone?? Like larry said- its worth more then your bone stock everyday run of the mill 5010. My dad's always told me he remembers seeing the add at the parts counter at a local JD dealer, he always thought that would be cool. I've recently acquired a complete set of M&W books and fliers that if you were a dealer you would of had- I'll have a look and see if I have anything- not sure if I will because this stuff is probably some of the later info- as it includes the turbo's kits for late 70's early 80's tractors, but i'll look and let ya know. I'm not 100% sure that it was M&W- if you had pics or numbers of the kit that show it as M&W that would be helpful.

Always to many people on here that like to tell everybody else what to do with their tractors and their money.

Not sure what a "3160" is, but I figured you would be putting a 3408 Cat in that 5010..
I can tell you THAT V-8 has some Torque..
On the road, 98% of the miles loaded, we averaged right at 5.2 MPG. Not as good MPG as a 3406, but
would "Stroll" down the road..(13 sp and 4.11's).

3150 was the predicessor to the 3208- but i'm not sure if they went 3150-3160-3208???

3160 a marine motor maybe? 3408 are a BIG motor- not sure if that would fit or not- event thought I have seen 903 cummins in a couple and thats a big motor as well- boat anchor- but a big motor.

I found a copy of a piece of literature that I had on the 5010-5020 w/ the M&W Super Pow'r 80 conversion kit. I don't know how to upload pictures so below is a link to the picture I put on my website. Sorry the image is a little blurry but gives you some of the information. It is a Cat 3160 engine. Just copy and paste the whole url and it should work. Hope this helps.

Thats cool that you found one. I'd want it more from a collectors stand point as a actually work tractor seeing as there was only 50 done and you know there aren't that many left. That is just me though. I'd like to see some pics of it if you have any.

The motor has tags on it that it was shipped from CAT to M and W gear in Gibson City IL. Also the back plate of the motor must of been custom made to fit bc it reads M and W gear also. The tires are 24.5.32's.

Bert the only co that i eversaw makeing a kit to install a v8 cat in jds was M&W Gear CO you are right as to v8 not being any good they are not my favright but still plenty are pretty good 7.3 ih used in ford truck 6.6 duro max 3208 cat i have in a strait truck there are others to i would go a long on 903 cummins is junk a lot has to do with gearing i have a ford f800 with a 429 runs good the gearing is crap and the truck is a dog loaded

yes they made a powerhouse out of a sick horse. a neighbor had one back when they came out and it pulled like a bulldoser but the bellhousing cracked after a while.

Every thing has it's limits,,Darn it,,,"Faster Horses Need Better Wagons" I was looking at those re-powers at Rantual also, some nice conversions, Kinze put a lot of thought into them..

Anybody know of a kit laying around?

Mike, glad you posted about your 5010.It has added a little extra life to the forum. After the first couple of responses I thought you would wonder about who got up on the wrong side of the bed.The neat thing about something rare or different is you could have the nicest most correct restoration that costs way more than its worth and park your 5010 next to it and draw more of a crowd.I was at our State Fair and a parent asked an owner if he could take a picture of his son on a nice tractor and his reply was no it was for show only.I walked by that one.I hope you keep us informed on your new project. The checks in the mail for the red one I just bought from you.

well im back--rough crowd? BRING IT!!
i have been thru this before......5010 motors are junk and this is spoken from a jd guy. back in the day people tried to take advantage of the heavy rear ends by converting them. i wish i had mine. then i could run over morons that talk about castration on here. ITS AMERICA---
BUY WHAT YOU WANT......ROCK ON.

Ggggg! LOL I guess that's all true.... Lotsa far more special tractors than a 5010forging that get butchered up every day.....obviously a huge improvement to the owner...to each his own....
