SIL is looking at a 504 IH/Farmall gas, WF, row crop. It would be used for a 12' grand drill, 1190 IH haybine, square baler and pulling wagons. Needs an engine overhaul. Rubber is fair. Asking price is 1750. I've never been around one.

Thoughts???

I have not had any problems getting parts new or used. When I got mine it was beat on by the previous owner had to replace a lot of gears in the trans. I cant tell you how it is in the field as this tractor I only use for loader work.

I like mine, it is a little under powered for the size of the tractor(rated as a three plow) I have a Farmall and an International, both gas.

What size plow? We had a guy here who had a 3 plow tractor and complained that it was under powered. Tractor was rated at 3-14 and he was trying to break sod with a 3-16.

Unless your ground is FLAT, you're asking way too much of that tractor to pull the implements you described.

A 504 is basically a bored-out Super C engine bolted to a 460 rear end. Very similar to a 340, with frame rails and 18 more cubes. Tractor's kinda light, and the engine isn't very torquey. Keep the RPMs up and it's ok on power, but don't try to lug it like an M.

I had a gas. Smaller than a 460 both hp and weight. Larger than a 340 by a small amount. C block style bored out. "Buzz" power, high rpms lower torque. different manifold than C-340. Cheap to run, started good , better hydraulics than 460. Three point if installed, cat I, different to get on. Takes C-240 bolt pattern on wide front.Pulled 273 baler ok but would not go on too many hills with a large load because it was light weight. Overall liked it but it was not large enough too many times and bought a 560, would have liked it better if it had TA, mine did not.

I like mine, but as the others have said they are alittle on the gutless side, I had no trouble gettin parts for mine as it needed everything replaced or rebuilt in the engine along with a complete restoration. Mine is still a working tractor, If your ground is flat and the motor is healthy it will do what you want but its gonna have its hands full.
