Went to my locl napa store for parts in Libby M.T. & remembering tip #10 told them to throw 4 of those sediment bowl gaskets just to have on hand, oops 4.59 apiece. What happended to 50 cent gaskets? I only bought one. Guess I,m cheap.

That is why I don't own any machinery anymore. You think that is bad. The Case 2090 and 2290 use two little universal joints on the bottom of the steering wheel shaft under the dash to connect to the steering pump. They are probably about two inches long and five eights inch in diameter. One of them broke on the 2090 last year and again this year. I just pulled it out and repaired it as best as I could. Finally got around to calling the dealer last week to order four of them. The parts guy said he could still order them and they were $268.00 each. Told him for that price I would make them if they broke again.

That didn't sound right,so I looked in my Steiner tractor parts catalog.Sediment bowl gaskets are 90 cents each in their catalog.I think your NAPA man was trying to rip you off.

Napa wants you to believe they are cheaper than the dealers but that is not always true. Years ago I was helping my brother install a sherman and he needed a new throw out brg so we went to Napa and first they said they didn"t have one so I gave them the Ford number (C5NN7600A) and they sold us one for $12. At that time they were $3 at the dealer but we were 70 miles away.

When I wrote the 50 Tips in 2006, the NAPA sediment bowl gasket was 50 cents. But I have stopped using them because NAPA reduced the thickness. I use TSC part number 0237144. It’s cork, so soak it in gas first.

My local NAPA is trying to be too much like the other brands (advance, zone etc) and have even set the store layout just like the other guys. When you walk in, it appears that it is a place for people who only wash and clean cars etc. Additionally my last visit to my local NAPA occurred when I stopped in to get some heavy duty orange tire string plugs. Guy puts a pack of 5 on the counter and says 12.47. I said what, we usually get a box of 25 or 30? He said yes sir, but these are the good ones. I said you keep them. I went to a real parts store across town (non national brand) and picked up a box of 30 (same plugs) for 5 bucks. I do know of some great NAPA stores but my local one is good only if you like paying 400% mark ups.

Those NAPA 730-9506 gaskets were first posted here by me many years ago. At that time they were 3/32" thick, very uniform and of good material. Going on about 7-8 years ago they changed to some cheaper material that varies in thickness from about .045 to .075 sometimes half of that range on one piece! Since that time they are pure trash and as you mentioned at $4.59 ea!!! NAPA has gone East as have most other firms. Make your own or find someone elses suitable gasket.

G.B. will be headed that way next week, wifes got big surgery at Kalispell Regoinal. Hoping all goes well. Long drive from Heron.
