520 Power Steering Leak

I have a 520 with a leaking power steering seal. At least that is what I think it is. The fan slings oil from somewhere. I have checked the hoses. The question is: Would a power steering additive like Lucas help,or is that a bad idea?

Lucas is a good product. I have good results putting the stuff in my old trucks. Warm the conditioner up by the stove first as it is very thick. Good luck.

Generally those old pump seals just need to be replaced. That system is really viscosity sensitive. On most models, if you are careful, you can get the pump out without removing very many other items. A fairly straight forward fix for the home shop guy.

I am not going to say that it will or will not work.
But let's be honest. If any company ever truly produced a product that could perform like a good mechanic, unemployment would be even higher and the replacement parts companies would be hurting as well..
I can tell you that most of the "radiator fix" and "head gasket fix" products typically do two things. They make your wallet lighter until you decide to have it repaired properly. And, they make a big mess for the person that ends up repairing it properly.
There is a possibilty that an agent in that goop will soften or swell the seal enough to temporarily slow down or even stop the seal.
But, that seal has lasted a real long time based on the model of your tractor. Why not repair it properly and never need to worry with it again?

Get a piece of cardboard and put in front of the fan to protect the radiator as you move the pump and fan ahead to get off the splines.

Gary,

Best to replace the seals. The system is very sensitive to fluid viscosity. That is one of the reasons most will only use JD fluid in them.
