Will it hurt to run my DC without a thermostat? This tractor will seldom if ever be run in freezing weather. Thanks.

It probably will not hurt your tractor at all. The operators manual highly suggests having a thermostat and running @ 180 degrees to reduce cylinder wear. You will most likely never get that hot, unless you are working it hard, without a thermostat. It depends upon what you are using it for and how long you want the engine to last. Don

Thanks. All this one is being used for is an antique pull every now and then. Some parades and hay wagon rides.

I have a DO and a DC that seem to run fine without a thermostat. They top out around 140F under normal conditions.

If you are going to pull your tractor or plow with it or rake hay or anything else you should have a thermostat in the tractor. Engines perform best and make the most horse power at operating temp. I"ve run DC"s and others on a M&W dyno and have seen for myself that an engine running at 180 degrees is making the most HP. You also wont get that sludge build up on the valve train and the top of the head. I bought a head for my 88 puller and took it in to get checked out and the owener of the machine shop said sombody must not have had a thermostat in by the look of the sludge on the head and carbon in the ports. Pulled the housing and sure enough no thermostat. Proof enough for me. Dave S

Here is wisdom learned from others smarter than me. A T'stat, I'm told is essential for long engine life, otherwise the engine doesn't cool properly. The back end of the engine will run hotter than the front end causing premature wear in the back.
I was working on a Ford 332 V8 truck many years back & she would overheat & chug coolant. I took the T'stat out & no change, still did the same thing. A seasoned mechanic stopped by & told me to install a new T'stat, which I did & the problem was solved.

Not to hijack the thread but I was wondering what types of tsats guys are using. I'm not sure if the DC is the same as the SCs in this regard. My SC is intended to use a tsat that fits inside the upper hose. Are these types even available anymore?

The SC & DC used different T'stat's. We just got the tooling & started making the flanged T'stats for the VA'S SC's & others where it went in the hose. Actually the SC fit on top of the outlet, but it was small dia. & this will work.

I have a DC. The tactor/auto parts store gave me a stat that was used for a Chrysler car..old chrysler. These old boys in this store said that CASE used chrysler stats as original equipment. Dont know where you are at, but it was at Wrights Auto Parts in Quincy Illinois. They have lots of tractor parts. 217 222 3066
