Hey guys I just picked up a 1953 JD 60.The clutch is stuck so I took off the cover and I was able to get the bolts loose and take out the two fibre rings and the other peice with the three springs that I am guessing is the pressure plate.I can't get the next part out,I put a puller on the gear but it won't slide off the shaft.Should I put the heat to it and try the puller again or am I missing something.Hope you can help.

Did you remove or loosen the bolt in the center of the crankshaft ?

Use the tapped holes to mount your puller. A flat bar with 2 holes and 2 long 1/2" bolts is all one needs for a puller. Those are commonly found loose on the crank and the splines ruined.

You can apply some pressure on it and then apply some heat and see if it pops loose. Or someone could have welded or epoxied it to the crank. Once you get the bolt and large washer off take a close look at the splines and see if it is rusty or epoxied.

When I took off the bolt in the center I noticed three shimms in the splines,it looks like they were cut from a budwiser can.The piece is not welded to the crank and the spline looks to be in good shape from what I can see from the end.Tomorrow I'll try the heat then and see if it will pop loose. Thanks fer the help.

Be careful if you use a puller you can bust the driver (the part you are trying to take off). You need to use the nuts and go from the backside. I busted mine with a hairline crack. It ran for a couple of monthst that way without me knowing it until the crack became bigger and the driver came out of the splines on the crank. These are the weak links in the 2 cylinders. Beer cans were used to take up the slop in the old days between the crank splines and the driver splines. Yours probably had some slop in it and thats why someone did the beer can thing. Good luck! Use care!
