long story short. Dads 530 go's pop pop miss miss. A mechanic put in new coil, plugs points rotor, cap, condensor, wires, and had deere rebuild the carb completely. Still pop pop miss miss. In looking it over I noticed printed on the coil 6 volt. I put a tester on the plug wire, when it misses, it has no spark. Now am I stupid or isn't this supposed to be 12 volt. The tractor only runs with the choke half on. Dad had a IT manual for it but I can't find it and dad died 2 years ago. This tractor had 13000 hours on it 30 years ago, and it was dads baby, I'm guessing, 25-30,000 hrs on it. now,I have not checked the compression and know nothing about govenors. Please help me! I still think electrical. Thanks.

530 starts on 12 volts and runs on 6 volts. Actually a little less than 6 volts. If you have no voltage on plug wire then I think you found your miss. If engine will only run on 1/2 choke then carburetor has a plugged passageway or is adjusted incorrectly.

You may have an electrical problem, but for sure you have a circuit plugged in the carb if you have to have the choke pulled out to run. Send me an email, we can discuss.

Probably a good thing the I&T manual is gone. They only contain enough info to get most folk into trouble, 1-800-522-7448 for a real JD manual . You will wonder afterwards how an IT manual can be 1/3 the size and cover several models of tractors.
The coil is supposed to be 6V to operate with a ballast resistor when running. And receive full battery voltage while cranking.
Odds are either the coil or battery is connected backwards which weakens the spark. Pos battery post to chassis . pos post on coil to points and (-) to the ignition switch.
While they maynot be the primary problem. Toss the old resistor wires & Champion plug that maybe on the tractor. Replace with solid core wires and Autolite 3116.
Next is the carb. 9 times out of ten the carb rebuilder takes the obvious parts off, dunks it in solvent and airblasts the carb.Problem is that misses the three invisible idle passages at each throttle plate. Odds are too the steel balls need to be removed and the passages rodded out.
Normal for a 52+ old machine with that many years of gasoline gum, dirt and rust accumulating in those little bitty passages.
Don't give up. The 50 and in particular the 520/530 are what a B should have been.
