550-C transmission

I know they are a nightmare! lol.Getting ready to pull the transmission out and go through it,it is the only thing on this dozer that has not been worked on,what i am wanting to know is what to look for in it plus where i can get parts for it other than going to the dealer.Thanks for any info.

As of 4 years ago , no aftermarket parts were available other than clutch plates and discs..Follow the tech manual to a "T"..Listen for an errant snapping noise when slipping things together..Possibliity of breaking of the many sealing rings..Good Luck

There are alot of parts in there.Have a good clean area available.. I wouldnt be overly concerned with totally disassembling the transmission control valve as I've personally never seen any real problems in there... maybe others have though.. The torque converter isnt like a welded together converter you may be familiar with. It is "repairable".. Pay close attention to the stator.. the piece with the vanes or fins in it in the center area of the converter assembly. I've seen several with loose vains that almost look like they SHOULD move as they all moved similar to one another... they shouldnt move at all.. Pay close attention to all the clutch packs and how many discs and plates each has. Also the actuating piston in one or more arent the same as the others..I had one apart three times searching for a cause of a slipping pack that someone else assembled with the wrong piston in the wrong clutch pack. Maybe that explains my hatred of working on those transmissions!!... good luck... ask questions when they arise.. Also may want to consider going through the steering clutches at the same time..

their should be some used parts available also, as im sure many of these machines have been knocked in the head, with all the transmission problems.
